Beings its summer and maybe having some time to retreat to the cooler basement or not do any of you guys or gals have plans to improve, build, your layout?
I'm going to rip up about a third of my layout and for those that Don't know my layout is 24/7 Christmas themed with dept56 buildings and accessories. I will change how it is powered and I'll be adding hopefully about 8-10 buildings and a better overall look to the area.
I like to this every year to keep the display fresh.
What are your plans?
Dave

Other than to rake off the accumulated excess "stuff" and drop a few additional power leads, I've no plans to do anything major. There was a time when the layout was substantially altered/rebuilt annually, but those days are well behind me. Now I'm more interested in motive power and equipment rebuilds/refurbishments, and building the odd items for the Christmas display (stuff I can do on the kitchen counter or dining room table).

Well, we got the roof replaced that leaked the heavy winter rain storms onto one end of the layout along with some wall and carpet damage just as I was beginning to install track.
Now it's time to dismantle half the layout so the contractor we choose can get to the walls. Then begins the interview process for the contractor. Insurance company has already assessed the damage and paid us, including for the water being wicked up by the layout legs.
When all that is finished I will rebuild the layout and restart track installation. However, in the meantime we decided we will be moving in the next two years, so the layout will not be as detailed as planned. I'll install a couple of loops to test and service current and new locomotives and rolling stock to prepare them for the eventual move and ready them for the new edition of THE PENN AMERICAN RAILROAD in it's new environment.
All of this is God willing.

I loved Chester County when we lived there, but I'm having trouble convincing Lynley to move to areas where it snows (and I don't miss it much myself!). But I'm trying to get as close as possible!

We hardly get snow anymore, we had very little the past five years unlike upstate new York where a friend lives and the year before the had 9 1/2' of snow in one snow storm. That's a bit much!.

One flake is too much! It’s not just snow, but the bitter cold days and nights. The only ice I see now is in the bottom of my glass or at the arena for a Gulls hockey game. It’s been real easy to get used to the mild winter weather here. I’m trying to negotiate a compromise.

I am in the building process of my fifth layout over the past 35 years or so, most likely the last one. Not interested in scale realism any more just a good running layout for a variety of different operating types of locos. Bill www.youtube.com/user/seayakbill

Well my plan was to build my first permanent O gauge layout this year but now that I am running standard gauge and G scale I don't know what the hell to do. I need a bigger basement.....

Dave,, best success on your layout upgrade, sounds exciting. My 8' x 22' layout in the attic in my old house is in pieces and will likely go to a dumpster shortly. It was poorly (and quickly) constructed about 18 years ago using project board and 1" x 2"s sitting on saw horses. I am close to finishing the salvage of wire. I am almost to the point of putting an order in for lumber for an approximately 7' x 15' layout in a train room in our 'new to us' house. I have been laying out cardboard for the footprint and having my wife make measurements. My main objective is to have a loop aroung the perimeter with O72 curves; everything else will be nested therin. I want this type of loop to run my passenger train and long freights. Alfred

Here in Spartanburg, S.C. the weather isn't to bad at all. yes we have some cold weather for about a month if that long, but today is probably close to what you have today we have a high of 84* Think how much closer you might be to York, PA.

South Jersey isn't too bad Diesel and you would be close to philly and the shore!

South Jersey isn't too bad Diesel and you would be close to philly and the shore! Those are both great places. The Carolinas are on our radar and I know South Jersey very well. But there is much research to do, we want this to be our final move (above ground). We need to find out about state taxes, close by medical facilities for the (hopefully far) future, flood plains, warm weather and then find a great neighborhood then a suitable home, including a place for a decent sized layout and a shorter commute to York.
Until then I want to get some trains running here to have fun and get excited about a future layout.
