I have found that most sellers would offer a discount. Couple of things I have learned:
1. If you put something on your watchlist, often within the next 24 hours the seller will offer something like a 10% or 15% discount. 2. Some sellers will enable the "Make an Offer" button. More often than not, when I make an offer the seller will come back with a counteroffer and usually mees somewhere in the middle. Sometimes they take my offer too.
3. Last resort, I will contact the seller to make an offer and sometimes, if it is something that needs work, I will state that their price doesn't make sense as I need to do X, Y or Z to get the item up to snuff. Sometimes that works.
Simply, it never hurts to ask.

I do the same, sometimes it works sometimes the seller won't budge 2. Some sellers will enable the "Make an Offer" button. Sometimes that works. There's a 3rdrail NYC F3 AB set on ebay right now, seller is asking in my estimation 300 bucks to much. Thinking of asking, can't hurt.

Trying to buy good quality standard gauge is an out right joke. The prices for absolute garbage is insane. I refrain until York...

I usually refrain from eBay I can find what I want elsewhere. There are plenty of trains elsewhere.

I have to agree with the absurd prices being asked by E Bayers. Used items priced as new almost. PS2 used Doodlebugs priced at new prices. Overpriced rolling stock. But then again, some are getting these at those high prices. Even Trainz has got many overpriced items on used and outdated with outdated boards in them. I put items up, but always way below and they have all sold when I bring them over to my neighbor to sell for me. Usually within a week items are sold. I am surprised by how much EBay takes in though and charges sellers. Sold an item for 125.00 weeks ago with 14.75 shipping. I got 87.00 and gave neighbor 10.00.

Here's how I do ebay.
When buying, I bid the most (with shipping) that I am willing to pay. If I win, great! If not, it wasn't meant to be.
When selling, I list an item with a starting bid at the least I am willing to take for it. If it sells, great! If it sells for more, even better! If it doesn't sell I keep relisting until it does. Believe me, my starting prices are not ridiculous.
Yes, I believe the ebay and paypal fees are killers (not sure, but probably about 15% to 17%). I believe Facebook Marketplace is starting to charge, and it seems there are plenty of scamsters there. I recently saw someone who sold something there, and 6 months later the buyer disputed the charge on their credit card (they used PayPal f&f). The seller had no recourse and lost their money.

Wow thanks for the heads up on the PayPal scam... From now on I am will only take cash or a check that clears! I had one guy purchase a Y6b from me and ran the snot out of so much the screws were backing out of the motor. He demanded a full refund 3 weeks later and I had to abide by ebay rules. Not Happy...

The pricing is bad enough on many products. Then the shipping is the final kick in the pants.

eBay pricing for O-Gauge Trains has been off the rails for years... and it's only getting worse. Every so often I'll look, and all I can do is shake my head.
Several years ago, I was looking for some MTH schnabel cars. So I saved a "search" that every now and then still pops with an email when one is available. This morning one of those searches popped... and sure enough, one of the most common Westinghouse schnabel cars was listed with an opening bid of $235... and get this... a buy-it-now price of $699 if you'd prefer to avoid the bidding process. Of course, shipping is another $55. Even the Schnabel cars that tend to command high prices today (i.e., John Deere, NASA, Harley Davidson, Catterpillar, etc...) were originally priced between $90 and $120 MSRP, when MTH first made them.
I'm all for capitalism and free enterprise, but these shysters selling on eBay bring NOTHING to the table but their own greed. And calling them out on it is useless, because they don't care what we think about them. They're just preying on enthusiastic fools with more money than brains. MTH still owns the tooling for these. So the best thing to happen to the eBay shysters would be for MTH to cut them off at the knees with a series of re-issues.

Please let us know what happens with this schnabel car with an opening bid of $235 and a buy-it-now price of $699. If it sells or even gets a bid.

I sell alot of stuff on ebay on two separate ID's. I am not a shyster I list things very similar to what Frank M described The listing price is the minimum I would take So if somebody makes an offer close to it its sold What most of you dont understand is that Ebay charges you for everything including shipping So inflated shipping charges in most cases arent bogus its to cover the cost of the fees ebay will charge I have been watching the way Trainz does business lately They will list something at an astronomical price and lower it in increments every time it doesnt sell at the end of the auction

Not every eBay seller is a shyster. But the list of shysters grows by the week these days. Sometimes when I see an outlandish price, I almost have a good idea who's behind it before I look for the seller. The shysters tend to build that kind of a reputation for themselves. LOL!!!
Regarding your other comment... the TrainZ approach isn't THAT new, although I'd echo the point about their initial asking prices being quite outlandish.
I recall back in the OGR heydays after selling there caught on, some sellers were true-to-form in that they'd post a price for an item. And then they'd lower it EACH DAY THE ITEM DIDN'T SELL. What they didn't realize is they were inherently training prospective buyers to hold off on initial prices... knowing the first asking price would be dropped the following day... and each day thereafter until it sold. Then of course, if Buyer #1 waited too long, they'd lose out to Buyer #2 who slid in ahead of them at a price Buyer #1 passed on. Too much drama for my taste.
