Over several decades I've always checked out those bargain and junk boxes some deals have had at Train Shows. I have never paid more then 5 dollars and even found some for 1 to 3 dollars rolling stock. Sometimes just for parts, sometimes with a plan to add to my rolling stock. Soak overnight in 91 alcohol, wash, dry, paint, add your decals, paint any details, make your own flooring on your printer, paint and age, glue. Assemble, and now have a new addition to your roster. This car cost me 3.00 at a local train show. paint and decals I made added 5.00. Alcohol was at that time 98 cents at WalMart. Attachments:

You did a great job on that car, Walt. You never know what you’ll find in a bargain box under a vendor’s table.

Over the years I found many parts, junk cars that I turned into credible freight cars. My favorite junk box or under table finds were flat cars. I like making freight cars loads and military flats. In today's world with inflation and items more expensive looking for parts and other type cars for a reasonable cost is a hobby in itself.

"Under the table" is generally a productive place to rummage.

YIKES!!! EGADS!!! You gave away one of "MY" York secrets! I learned after two Yorks to look under the tables. There are always some great stuff waiting for me or you guyz!!! I've found engine shells.....and some I buy.....why" With some plastic parts (yup, junk parts), I've made switchable shells for even some of my modern diesels!

The only problem looking under tables is that for some reason they seem further away then they did many years ago. But it is still worth the effort!!

Now that almost sounds like a good idea, maybe one of those crawlers I used to work on my hot rod with, definitely would be faster!! Dave

Just bring a grandchild along to the shows! They will be "closer" to the boxes, be curious, get interested and stop you with "What is that in the box?" and make you stop and look. Plus when negotiating, NOBODY can turn down "that look" of a young, new train hobbyist-in-the-making! So the prices will be fantastic!
(Tell me how I know this!) The added benefit is that you will be actively recruiting a new model railroader and possibly even a new steward for your collection down the road!
Just a few thoughts from "outside of the box" (under the tables).

Plus, you'll have a little pack-horse to help schlepp all of your under-table finds/purchases!
