I find it very interesting that the first thing some new members do is post something for sale instead of participating in other ways on the forum. Many of them have the items for sale on a multitude of internet railroading forums.
I guess they just want to improve their odds of selling the items.

Well that is one of the advantages to this forum and it definitely works!

I'm okay with that...put your stuff in front of a targeted audience.

As I say at our local hobby shop, 'Come for the inventory, stay for the entertainment'. Whatever get's them in the door be it a store, or a forum is fine by me. Maybe the initial motive is not for the mutual benefit of other members however if it draws other folks to browse around perhaps they will decide to become a member. Several of my train buddies have noted that the sales postings/results for OGF are pretty anemic compared to other forums. Maybe we need a good shot in the arm to invigorate that aspect of the value membership to our forum provides.

Nothing wrong with coming here and posting stuff for sale. We all benefit from new members posting, you may find something you need or want.

It would be nice if the seller participated in the forum in addition to offering items for sale but they do no harm by only selling and our members might see something they want.

Almost every new member also is a member of any model railroad forum they can find and all they do is post items for sale. It’s the very first thing they do. On another forum that I participate in one new member who just posted items for sale was a scammer as were private messages I received from an unknown new member responding to a WTB posting that I had. All scams. In fact I had an issue with one of the new members on this forum with an item I purchased off of him from a posting on OGR. It was for a postwar set described as in perfect operating condition. In fact the engine was DOA with a direct short. I had to pay to get it repaired and was never compensated even though I filed a complaint with the TCA which was never resolved. So, just beware.

Personally I view the for sale section as an added benefit for being a member. Enroll, participate in discussions, and oh, BTW, I have something for sale. If your only post is a for sale item, I don't think you're really participating in a forum.

It would be unfortunate if the main thread section became a buy and sell area; if the posts are confined to the Buy/Sell area, that is OK. There are potential problems as indicated by trainman9. Hopefully sellers who post become interested in the forum's content and begin contributing. Alfred

Strolling through the member list I notice a lot of people who have signed up over the years and have never posted. Not posting in a year gets you deleted not a thing anymore??

I see that on most forums I participate in. Here, for one, you can't view a full-sized image from a thumbnail unless you're a member and signed in. Things like that likely drive folks to become members, but just for viewing purposes.

Gary, each member has to login at least once a year but they don't have to post. Some members login regularly but never post. It would be nice if they posted, they would contribute and make friends, but if reading threads and never posting is how they enjoy the forum that's OK.
