Joe, good progress - enjoy. Alfred Thanks Alfred. Nice progress. Those structures look great. I always browse the N-scale structure aisle at Mainline whenever I'm up there. I can feel my grip loosening... Thanks Healey. Thanks Adam.

I really like your track design it just looks right. Amazing how many cars you can fit in a smaller space with N scale.

I found this building at a train show in March. It looks like this side had a loading platform or something else that is long gone. I found some parts in my scrap box and made a walled area. It was pretty easy to do and makes the building more interesting. While this is N scale something similar could easily be done in O.

Joe, nice work on the building - there is usually treasure in the junk box. I was having difficulty (and frustration) getting an HO engine on the track on the mini layout I built for my granddaughter - I don't know how you manage with N scale - I am sticking with O gauge. Alfred

Alfred Alfred, I am able to put the locomotives and cars on the track by feel but I also have a ramp made by Kato that makes putting trains on the track quick and super easy.

This is the layout as it is right now. The yard is an interchange yard. I’m running trains, switching the yard and industrial tracks to be sure it operates as it should. Buildings are just placed to give an idea of how the layout might look. They will get moved to various locations with more buildings added until I’m happy with their location.

Looking good there Joe. Always amazed how quickly "N" scale was accepted and manufacturers went above in producing so many accurrate depicted engines and rolling stock, even structures. Except for kits and Woodland items, everything else is generic and toylike. Even people and cars and trucks have a latge amount to satisfy a modeler. A shame we in "O" accept so much generic stuff for a layout. I been thinking if I could sell everything to just go to HO again, and someone starting out in "O" would get a bargain and I would include my autograph.

If I had a bit more room I would have gone with HO just because they are bigger but I didn’t “settle” since I really like N scale. I think the major difference is that 3 rail O started as toy trains while HO and N started as scale model railroading. All 3 have moved toward more accurate models but HO and N don’t have a toy train group like O gauge does. It’s much cheaper and easier to build a scale layout with HO and N because that’s what is available unlike O where you have to pay a premium price for more accurate scale models. I guess the bottom line is that I’m not sorry I switched to N. I’m having a lot of fun with this layout.

Had close to 3500 in tracks, switches, engines (24), rolling stock (over 50 cars), buildings, etc. sold everything for 1000.00. Even had a roundhouse, turntable, etc. Like I said, if I can find someone interested in buying a complete "O" scale set, everything. I would let it go and go into HO. I'm just as you wrote tired of the high ridiculous askings, and generic output with just an added gimmicj and lack of quality control and service. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy my trains and a layout, but getting more interest in HO. LOL, in fact I bought some HO to see and run to see if its what I want and looking as I do.

If you switched to HO you could have a lot more operations in the same space. One of the things I like about N and HO is that all decoders are compatible with all DCC systems. I have a Lenz system and can run any DCC and DCC/sound engines. I think you’ll be pleased with HO. They are just as reliable as O, have pretty much everything O has and more at much better prices, but they are about half the size. I sold some of my O gauge at a train show but most went to my local train store. They are selling them on consignment. I get 70% and the store gets 30%. I opted to take store credit rather than get paid since I was starting N from scratch and would need lots of stuff. I love O gauge but don’t have room for it anymore and, like you, I’m not happy about the prices, generic models, and quality control issues though I never had any problems with my MTH equipment.

Joe, you may have stated your case earlier but I missed it...is this layout/project in-addition-to your O-gauge, or have you transitioned from O entirely and gone over to N?

Paul R. Hey Paul, the short answer is that I have switched from O to N. I’ve kept some of my O to run under the Christmas tree but sold most of what I had. Storage space is limited in Florida homes so I’m thinking of selling the rest of my O but I’m not sure yet. The longer answer is that my wife and I are dealing with nagging health issues (we are both in our mid 70s) that made it very difficult to stay in our previous house. We tried to find a house that would give me room for an O gauge layout but the few that we found were not suitable for various reasons. I’ve had both HO and N in the past and, after giving it quite a bit of thought, decided to switch to a smaller scale if we could find a house that would meet our needs. The house we found is much easier to maintain. I have a small bedroom as my train room. I could have squeezed in a 4x8 layout but I know that I wouldn’t be happy with that. My best option was to switch to N which is what I did. The OGF is an O forum and I don’t want it to become multi scale but some members wanted to see what I was doing so I started this thread. As long as there are no objections I’ll keep it going.
