I rarely prime stuff as I don't want to obliterate any detail...just a couple light coats of whatever color you choose. The bodies were likely dipped at the Lionel factory, not painted with a spray. They look to be in much better shape than the three I have. One question - how was the railing attached on the back of the observation? The railing wasn't attached well. Someone clearly had taken it apart and didn't do a good job putting it back on. But it has the usual tabs in a few spots to attach. I plan to paint the railing using some Testors metallic gold with a brush. Should look really good. Testors metallic paints are excellent and go on nicely. Thanks. I'm curious as I have this to deal with: Doesn't appear to have broken tabs, so likely a solder job, one that will be a bit delicate. This from the first 61X-series, so I don't want to do anything too drastic as I want to retain the original "New York Central" stampings (I don't think anyone is making repro decals in that motif, but could be wrong). The roofs, however, have quite a bit of corrosion and missing paint, so those will probably get a strip and respray. The rest I'll just try to polish up. We'll see...these are floating to the top of the project pile, so I gotta come up with a plan. Testors gold enamel will do a nice job; hopefully you have some in inventory, as it's a bit tough to find.

I should mention that my plan is to go bold. I could go with the original olive-green, but I am not a huge fan of the color and find it a bit dull.
I am currently thinking red with gold trim. They should look stunning when all is done.

One of the Michaels near me had some stock, so I got lucky. Good luck with that soldiering job.

"Good luck with that soldiering job."
Thanks, I'll need it. This might be another one of those times when I barter for some help from one of my professional model-maker friends.

I've done a lot of soldering over the years, but hadn't recently. The last time I tried it was a disaster. Thought maybe it was old solder, lousy flux, etc.; turned out there was a short in my iron that caused it to cut on and off. It was never quite getting hot enough. Once I realized what the problem was, I got a new iron and things worked a bit better, but still not great. You really need to practice a bit and maintain your skills; it's not good to go ten years between tasks, lol. I've got a number of O-scale two-rail modeler friends that are soldering stuff all of the time. They use irons on rheostats to get more precise temps; they also use resistance-type irons for delicate work. Their skills are way beyond mine, even looking back to the days when I was decent at it. Anything delicate or that I'm unsure of how to proceed, I defer to them.

They should look stunning when all is done. I like dark red for stuff...it looks old even when it's not. I have a battered Ives 3251 that will likely get a respray in a dark red; we'll see how that goes. Here's a set of Lionel 61X-series cars I bought years back to run behind my MTH 254E. A previous owner refurbished them. They are nice, but there's a short in one that trips the circuit-breaker on the Lionel pack I use. It's another project that requires sorting. The color match is pretty much dead on.

I’ve always been partial to this 2 tone paint scheme. I’ve also seen these cars in 2 tone red and 2 tone blue.

I like the lighter green Joe, but for some reason neither green makes me go Wow.
Ive decided it will be red with gold trim.

Yes, the Stephen Girard color-combination is epic. I never got around to getting a set of the high-end Stephen Girard cars to run behind the MTH 9E I have. Now the cost is really out-of-sight.

I've decided it will be red with gold trim. That will be sharp...I look forward to seeing them.

We tried to repair it without removing too much paint, but that didn't work...it just popped apart an hour or so later. I think I'm going to clamp it in place and leave it for a week or so, see if that takes some of the "spring" out of it. We'll have to scrape off a bit more paint for the next solder attempt. The #98 set was only cataloged 1925-1927, so we're rolling up on a hundred years old. The old girl deserves some love.

Adam, I like your project, I recently purchased Lionel tin plate set #254 electric locomotive and 3 passenger cars, and a #253 electric locomotive The 253 taking it apart for painting it Peacock with Orange windows and ventilators Was there NO tabs securing the inside seat rail? Great job on your project so far Bob EDIT: a nice touch when completed is to replace roof screw part #418-36S (slotted screw) or part #418-36K (knurled screw) Jeff Kane at Train Tender has them in stock.
