Folks,
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it appears that "sales tax" collection practices on internet sales are beginning to change due to a relatively recent Supreme Court ruling involving State of South Dakota vs. Wayfair. I won't go into the details, but it appears ebay -- as a marketplace facilitator -- will now collect and remit sales tax on behalf of the seller for items sold on eBay. Depending on where you reside, this practice is being phased in during the 2019 calendar year.
I live in PA, and I noticed on an item I was planning to purchase, the shopping cart did indeed have a 6% PA sales tax calculated and tallied into the grand total. It's hard NOT to notice something like that. Next to this line item was a link that explained in more detail the why's and wherefore's. For PA (and 12 other states), this just went into effect on July 1, 2019. For a few more states, October 1st is the effective date when sales tax will be automatically added to your purchases by eBay. So if you live in those states, you might wanna buy that big-ticket item sooner rather than later.
This doesn't seem to affect ALL online transactions yet (i.e., items purchased DIRECTLY from an out-of-state seller instead of thru eBay). But I suspect that window will be closing soon too -- especially for the larger sellers. Smaller "mom and pop" sellers will likely still claim a hardship that it's too burdensome for them to know all the nuances of state sales taxes for all 50 states -- not to mention the hundreds (perhaps even thousands) of nuances of city/municipality sales tax details. But even at that, it's likely only a matter of time before ALL online transactions will have some type of sales tax component to them if the state in which you reside collects sales tax.
Ah yes.... it WAS nice while it lasted.
