To me it’s easier to decide what to buy now than it ever was. We’re not bombarded with multiple catalogs like we used to be.
I don’t have to decide between a K-Line, MTH, Lionel, Atlas O or Weaver freight car.
Do I order five K-Line aluminum passenger car sets or those MTH engines?
How can I get that 3Rd Rail steamer when I want the MTH and Lionel diesels?!
The current Lionel catalog is big with a ton of choices. But without the previous competition the choices are fewer. The new MTH daily offerings are like a catalog that trickles out product over a longer period of time. Only difference is we don’t know what’s coming. Since they are only using tooling that they already have, most are reruns of what I already have and few reissues of items I missed previously. Just the custom runs that I may have a connection to interest me. (And there have been quite a few).
For me it’s mostly a result of already having a lot of trains I’ve always wanted. Even so there’s about $7,000 worth of trains from various importers that I have interest in before I can even consider the Lionel stuff. I know I’m going to miss out on some of them, and probably most of them. Like I did when we had multiple catalogs from the importers.
It’s just a bit easier now without stacks of catalogs to look through to decide what to buy. But I do miss that.

What I miss are the days when Charlie Ro would offer a volume-purchase agreement if you spent over $5,000 in one calendar year. Then you'd get a 10% credit on your account that you could spend in the following year. But that was 20-something years ago, when many of today's YouTubers were still in diapers.
I still remember buying the Lionel Pennsylvania Postwar Celebration Series Congressional passenger set with that credit. It was a really nice perk -- especially when you could buy LOTS of goodies from the Lionel catalogs back in the day without going broke. $5,000 bought you quite a bit of trains in those days. I can't recall what Charlie's price was for the set, but the 2000 Catalog listed it for $1,300 MSRP.
BTW, Brady's Train Outlet has the set with an add-on car listed on their website for $950 today. Nice bit of nostalgia.
