So it's now been a full week since Lionel's new 2024 Big Book (Catalog Volume 1) was released online, and it appears the company is giving dealers and consumers ONE MONTH to get their pre-orders on the books. But are you any closer to making your decisions?
Well... it's somewhat difficult to whittle down those wish-lists, when we don't yet know ALL the goodies that will be offered. Even as I write this post, I just discovered more additional special-runs unveiled today... some Lionel products and some MTH products. Yes... those pesky "special-runs" aka "custom-runs" that seem to almost need their own catalog to keep ALL the offerings straight.
In a way, it's become quite the double-edged sword that we have SO MANY options from which to choose. Without actually saying the word "glut", that's precisely what we have in the pre-order market right now. Seriously, HOW MANY different products (either regular production catalog items, special announcements, or custom-runs) can we be expected to absorb? Does ANYONE else feel like they're on big-ticket product OVERLOAD -- whether you're seriously considering buying some or not?
Case in point: just for fun... I created a Lionel 2024 wish-list shopping cart on the Charles Ro website that tallies close to $10K. That's not an MSRP total... that's the Charles Ro "unadvertised" pre-order price level tally!!! And that doesn't include a Triplex or two that I'm eyeing from the 4Q2023 Vision Line Preview Brochure along with a possible dealer custom-run. Nor does it include a 2024 Big Book locomotive exclusively available through Lionel's webstore. And lastly it doesn't include some custom-run gems that are based on Lionel's new catalog but have yet to be unveiled... but should be before the end of January. WHOA!!!!
Bottom line: it's nothing short of a dizzying, daunting dilemma right now, because there's no <expletive-deleted> way I'm gonna be spending between $10K and $15K on model trains this year. Just ain't gonna happen. That's just ludicrous. Yet their doesn't seem to be ANY end in sight whatsoever of more and more big-ticket offerings being unveiled. So how are any of us to make informed decisions?
Never thought I'd think we could ever have too much of a good thing like we're seeing this year. I thought a record amount of big-ticket product hit the streets in 2023. But it's beginning to look like 2024 deliveries will be leaving their 2023 counterparts in the dust by a significant order of magnitude!!! Or at least the POTENTIAL for that to happen is there, if enthusiasts jump at all these offerings. Absolutely amazing!!!
I suppose, however, there are worse problems to have in life. But it is a bit mind-numbing nonetheless. Heck... even the most enthusiastic YouTubers will be challenged to keep their online content "relevant" without breaking their piggy banks. LOL!!!

I added up the things I would have liked to have, I stopped at $9500.00 but I was not done yet. Lots of cool stuff I would like to have but will not get. To those that can order please do to your hearts content. Lots of good stuff in fantasy and prototype, wish I could join ya.

Ahh, yes, our First World problems. The amount of model trains available now is small potatoes compared to the recent past. If you think back to twenty years ago we had thick catalogs from Lionel, MTH, K-Line, Atlas O, Weaver and Williams. Twice a year! And add in companies like 3Rd Rail and Golden Gate Depot. Catalogs chock full of products. Talk about dizzying overload! I don’t know how I did it.
That was before the current BTO sales model when dealers were competing and blowing out products at reasonable and low prices to make room for all the new items arriving. Prices were kinda reasonable and you could buy more.
What I eventually did was to create a spreadsheet for every catalog that was released of all the items I liked for the last fifteen years. As I look back on them I’m amazed at how many things I didn’t buy. With the crazy amount of trains I own there’s probably just as much that I didn’t get (yet).
So now I don’t stress over it. Now I refer to those spreadsheets, including the Lionel 2024 catalog listings, as my “Pipeline”. As I mentioned in the Lionel catalog thread the total of my favorites was $10,600. No way I’m spending that. And that doesn’t include current train production I’m thinking about that comes to roughly another $6,500.
Even though trains are my only real vice there’s no way I want to spend that kind of money. So I no longer worry about being able to acquire anything before the “deadline”. I add my wishlist to my pipeline and it gives me things to hunt for down the line.
In the not too distant past I thought there wasn’t much more that I’d want. LOL. I know now that is not true. But, if I never bought another train I can enjoy what I have for a long long time.

All of the special runs are made in limited Quantities; 25 to 50/100 pieces. They are limited by the expectations of the number that they can sell. If you want it, buy it when you see it. The short run engines/rolling stock will not be produced again and will be hard to find on the secondary market.

I’m just amazed at how many DIFFERENT big-ticket items are offered… page after page of them… plus more are being unveiled as we speak over the next couple of weeks. No end in sight. So it’s tough to decide when you’re not looking at the full picture yet. Or perhaps it doesn’t matter to some folks. And in the case of MTH, we’ll never see the full picture — since they can’t find it in their infinite wisdom to even produce a catalog anymore.

At our Museum, which we have the hobby shop, we are a Authorized Lionel Dealer, so we get quite a few people ordering from this new catalog. Occasionally I'll hear people bring up prices, but it's what they are willing to spend of what they really want. Sure their are some high prices on some of the engines and cars, but I don't complain about it anymore. I used to some years ago, but now its 2024 and I expect high prices. If anything, I thought the Polar Express was going to like 2,500 because of it being the 20th anniversary, but it's lower then that. So what I have learned in life, is if your willing to purchase a product, but are short on $, go for what you really want as later on you'll very likely find that product you previously wanted, but it'll be lower pricing.

To think the only thing I was making a decision on this week was either start the day with Wheaties or Cheerios.

My decision was made before the catalog even came out. No way no how. Lionel prices are crazy, their QC is in the dumps and I'm done with them. Only secondary market or if MTH/Atlas produces something I really want.
The Last pre order I got is for MR. Muffins special run of the B&A Berkshire which is going on two years now due to something that happen to the tooling. Can't get a straight answer out of Lionel who know if they will be made. Going to ask at the Amherst show next weekend.

And it’s pretty much off my radar screen for now. But do keep us posted. As far as I last heard, Lionel hasn’t abandoned plans to make this offering — even if it involves new tooling. So we shall see.
Thank goodness no deposits were involved though… and it’s precisely why I’m reluctant to put deposits down these days anymore. If stuff is sold out when products finally ship, then I was never meant to have them in the first place.

I find that doubtful if new tooling needed to be made. We'll see what Lionel says next week

God bless you folks who can afford these ridiculous prices! I'm afraid Lionel has left me in the dust!
