Fortunately or not once I opted to go the seasonal layout route rather than permanent, my want list got winnowed down to Halloween and Christmas which inflicts a degree of self discipline that I otherwise have not here to for exercised. Consequently since all my so called 'wants' are fantasy I can happily avoid the prototypical concerns that can be so vexing to others; with the exception of 'Yueltide' duly noted.
However the course correction is not withheld its' own drama as I contemplate the disposition of the stable of engines and passenger sets that I acquired in anticipation of the permanent layout and try to work with the dealer with whom I placed preorders while still in permanent layout mode. The BTO model is not kind to unanticipated life changes and or vacillation for the buyer or the dealer.
But Halloween and Christmas are not w/o their own drama as I have waited 2 years more or less for the METCA Halloween and Christmas switchers. Not their fault, but I wonder if I should mention the engines in my will as I would hate to lose my deposit!
But after saying all that if I thought for a moment that Lionel was going to produce passenger cars to go with the Nickel Plate Road blue/silver fantasy paint scheme Berkshire I would be tempted.
The mind is willing but the flesh is weak.

The mind is willing but the flesh is weak. Ah... I've been eyeing METCA's Christmas A-5 which should make its way to dealers in 2024. I haven't put a deposit down, because I really wanna see the "finish" on these loco BEFORE making a commitment. If it's even close to what Lionel now refers to as its "plasma coating" (i.e., on the 2023 Locomotive of the Year as well as the 2024 Blue Polar Express Berk that is available exclusively through Lionel's Company Store), then that will be a must-have for Christmastime running.
As for the matching passenger cars to coordinate with Lionel's Nickel Plate Road blue/silver Berk, they're just SCREAMING to be done as a dealer custom-run. I'd opt for heavyweights with detailed interiors and passengers over Lionel's rather bland 21" passenger cars. Even better would be a custom-run 18" painted aluminum offering. And Mr. Muffins Trains or Stockyard Express would be the natural bets to make anything like that happen. Then again... there's always the 2024 Volume 2 catalog as well.

If I were a Polar Express devotee I would be all over the plasma coat Lionel Store exclusive. Then again, pulling a set of MTH North Pole streamlined cars with a similar paint scheme and led lights on the side of the cars, hmmm.
But to your point, Nickel Plate Road matching blue/silver 18" aluminum custom run?
You bet.
Consolation prize heavyweights with the works.
Not bad either!

God bless you folks who can afford these ridiculous prices! I'm afraid Lionel has left me in the dust! Phil55, Don't think your the only one, the prices I see are something I would never see or imagined. Dave

I did a bad thing. For those who know me, I'm a sucker for everything Boston & Albany, NYC, Rutland, or anything New England. Well I've know about these for awhile but just broke down and put in a reservation for two. Two of what you might ask? Well, Public Delivery Track has Rutland RS1 from MTH on pre-order. Yes sadly there's a deposit requires but how can you resist these?

I highly recommend you obtain a printed copy of Lionel's new 2024 Volume 1 Catalog if you can... because this catalog is like a small local telephone book from back in the day when phone books were actually printed. LOL!!!
I grabbed a copy today. It weighs-in at roughly 1lb 6 oz., and it contains almost twice the number of pages as the 2023 Big Book. Seriously, this 2024 Catalog Vol 1 really does warrant the name "Big Book", even though the last 50+ pages contain products that are "still available" from prior catalogs. There's no denying the "heft factor" with this chunk of paper.
The weight of the catalog combined with the endless number of big-ticket items (i.e., one page after another) leads me to conclude that I still don't have a clue what I might be pre-ordering. I really enjoyed paging through the catalog in-person. And although I can't quite explain why, there's something uniquely different about kicking back in a comfy recliner and paging through my own copy of the catalog as compared to paging through an online version of the catalog on a computer screen. Completely different experience altogether.
Bottom line: I'm still not sure what Lionel was thinking when they produced this beast. Don't get me wrong... it's a great catalog. But aside from the relatively small segment of enthusiasts with ultra deep pockets, there's NO WAY folks can browse this catalog with even the most remote hopes of buying "everything they like". Dare I say it's almost impossible? And holding the catalog in your hands as you page through it literally drives that point home in spades. There's simply too much there!!!
Something is seriously going on at Lionel, and this might very well backfire on them... because folks could conceivably decide, "Heck... there's so much here that I can't afford... I might as well not pre-order ANYTHING... and I'll just wait to see what arrives at train shops later in the year or early next year... and buy one or two items THEN."
BTO? Forgettaboutit. Waiting for delivery will give everyone an entire year to decide what they REALLY might want... since right now, each page is like playing with poker chips at a casino. After awhile there's very little difference between one item and the next, it's mind-boggling. $1,000 here... $1,600 there... and eventually the Lionel marketing folks have you believing, "What's another $150 for this cool piece of rolling stock!!!" When you're way past $5,000 another $150 is a rounding error.
As I said when I created this thread... when do we conclude that we're all at the point where we're overloaded with product? And browsing too much of a good thing leads us to become numb to all these offerings?
Not fully sure what to think yet... but with VERY FEW EXCEPTIONS (i.e., like the Triplex which I pre-ordered last October), I'm clueless as to what if anything I might pre-order this time around. At the end of the day, I might simply pick ONE item to make a token pre-order... and then just ride out the year to see what's actually delivered... and THEN -- just maybe -- do some shopping by trusting what my eyes actually see on store shelves... and not what Lionel's catalog is leaving to my imagination with the lure of its stellar graphics and sheer volume of offerings.
Should be an interesting year... that's for sure.

The paper catalog is heavy from the weight of the prices of the trains!!
I believe that the catalog could be twice as big but Lionel’s BTO model protects them. If they don’t receive enough orders the item will be cancelled. Or a hobby store orders extras beyond the orders they receive and they have all the risk. This is what happens when they don’t have the competition they once had.
Im sure Lionel knows not everything listed will be popular. The catalog is like their market research tool. If something is close but not close enough to produce they have that information for maybe a future catalog, or never again.
I love this catalog and the wishlist I created, on the surface, for the products listed. After reviewing my choices the steam locomotives I picked, the scale Polar Express Berkshire and the Milwaukee Road 4-4-2 Atlantic, give me pause as beautiful as they are.
There was a time I only wanted to buy scale Lionel steam. But during that time a few, maybe more than a few, had various problems. (Some that still need fixing). And the recent revealed gear box issues with the Mikados and PRR Decapods specifically, locos that I was interested in, did not instill confidence in the new steam locomotives. I don’t enjoy feeling this way because I love Lionel and all the other importers. But I can’t spend that kind of coin on something that may be infected with ongoing problems.
So I’ll wait until these are delivered and the reviews are in. I’ll pay a higher price for waiting, if they don’t have any issues. And I won’t be buying the PE passenger cars without the engine either. Everything else is still in the back of my “Pipeline” behind other trains I’m interested in so I may miss out on all of the Lionel wishlist. And there’s the issue of availability of funds for any of it after receiving several preorders recently. It’s a process.

Charles RO sends me a catalog every year, I have placed a pre-order already with them from the 2024 catalog. I don't have a yearly train budget but I have been purchasing 2-3 legacy diesels (also one steamer) the past few years as well as sets of UP fallen flags rolling stock. I don't need any more rolling stock, besides a few cabooses, possible Amtrak cars and possibly new UP fallen flag rolling stock. I did show my wife the Polar express section of the catalog (always great to have her approval to buy trains ) but she didn't say yea or nay on buying any of it....

First off, none of us need any of this stuff regardless of the manufacturer. It is all about wants.
Second, what is the big preorder discount, 10% give or take. You can easily get that much off after the release arrives from most dealers if you are patient. And if not so what? Unless you are preordering shopping carts full of stuff what does the 10% really add up to especially if you don't get free shipping and or no sales tax after the release?
Third, if I don't preorder it maybe it might not get built. So what. That is the BTO come on. With the exception of some of the more obscure rail lines/fantasy/holiday/custom run items what hasn't been produced already by somebody?
Fourth most of the new offerings are not so much about new never before produced engines/rolling stock (except custom runs) but rather more detail in the absolute and new software/features such as brass hybrids, water scoop smoke and wheel slippage.
Fifth if not for BTO there would be no new tooling. That myth is exposed in every catalog which announces new tooling/product even before sufficient orders have been received to satisfy manufacturing minimums.
I count myself among the happy participants in this madness and look forward to seeing what the new next big thing is going to be whether in a catalog or a weekly announcement. Shame on me for criticizing on one hand and participating with the other. And yes pages 130 and 131 in the Lionel catalog are tempting for my wants.
You may call me a hypocrite. I call myself worse than that on a regular basis.

No, Chuck, you’re not a hypocrite. You’re a model railroader that appreciates O gauge trains. We’re all in the same boat!

Unless you are preordering shopping carts full of stuff what does the 10% really add up to especially if you don't get free shipping and or no sales tax after the release?... Different products have different pre-order discounts. But anything over a 10% discount requires you to add the item into your cart to see the price… or you can call in your order the old-fashioned mail order way. Lionel reportedly doesn’t like their dealers “advertising” big discount pricing. So everyone’s published price-list has the same 10% discounts. But anyone seriously thinking about Lionel passenger cars should call Charles Ro, as they often have the most aggressive pricing without requiring a deposit — not a level you’ll typically see by dealers having a sale after products ship. So everyone decides what’s most important to them — which is the way it should be.

I usually preorder one or two items from each catalog, and this one is a big nope for me. Why? While I had considered buying one of the N6b cabin cars, the color was so far off on the last run that I’ll just sit tight and wait to see how they turn out.

And right on cue, Pat’s Trains announced a new custom-run on Monday consisting of an 8-car, Atlas-O Premier set of Black Bonnet 18” passenger cars. This offering will be a must-have for all the buyers of Pat’s Black Bonnet locomotives over the past few years.
So for Black Bonnet fans, there’s another $1,000 that can’t be spent toward Lionel’s new catalog. Sigh…
