I just received this today from TrainZ. It is a K-line Union Pacific 2-8-2 scale Mikado with TMCC, railsounds at a great price. After unpacking I oiled it, packed it some grease and dusted it off. It was very dusty like it sat on a shelf for a long time. The sounds are not bad but typical for the time it was made. It has two chuffs per revolution It runs very well considering it does not have cruise control. Everything works like the marker lights front and back, reverse light, head light, uncoupler, even a light in the cab. The detail is incredible. The front of the boiler opens up. It has a puffer for a smoke unit. Ran it for about 60 mins with no issues. I give it a A-, everything works well and I'm very happy I found this on the secondary market. Give the secondary market a try, if you feel your priced out of today's Lionel and others there is a market for you, it may not be the latest and greatest but your wallet and sanity will thank you. Nice find Dave!
Couldn’t agree more. I’ve got a used Doodlebug coming from Trainz. Can’t wait!

I agree whole heartedly and Trainz is an excellent source. I would sign up for their private car membership in a heartbeat and pay the monthly fee if they offered free shipping. Especially since I like to strip/repaint or hack up and kitbash. It's a lot easier to start cutting into a used model than cut up a brand new one out of the box. Here is my city station I made from three MTH banks. I was able to get the two used at a very attractive price. After months of trying to find a third used, I gave up and purchased a brand new one. I stared at that brand new bank for an awful long time before making the first cut. And even as I was doing it, it felt wrong.

I never got A's in school so I'm an easy grader!! Btw when are you moving back to the east coast? Hopefully close to Exton, Pa. I need a larger layout to operate on, not all the time but every now and then. I gotta run my old a%$ engines. Don't take too long I'm not getting any younger! Dave

I don't have motivation to buy new when the O gauge NOS and lightly used market is flooded with trains and growing every day. While my train collection is very large, my classic cars (7), collection of firearms and antiques (clocks, telephones, radios, old technology stuff) represents far better long term value. Still love my 4 loop layout and the model train hobby but now its only the occasional buy for the odd interesting piece.

Dave, I am glad you got such a great deal. Agreed, the secondary market is the way to go. If I recall, Brian (PTC) indicated that hunting was half the fun. Alfred

My MTH PS1 SantaFe Doodlebug has arrived. Looks good upon initial inspection. I will give it a look over, install a BCR (if needed) and give it a good cleaning/lubrication and test run over the weekend. Like it already though!

I finished the maintenance, changed the battery to a BCR (someone installed a 9v rechargeable before), lubed it up and she runs great! It was actually pretty clean already, so it wasn't too much effort to get it up to snuff. Here is a YouTube short of it running. Shorts won't embed here so you need to click the link and check it out on YouTube. www.youtube.com/shorts/fTk2BY7rT3M

Its the way I'm thinking, why buy new with potential problems when a used item has been test run for you.

I ordered an MTH RailKing Santa Fe Doodle Bug M-131 from Ebay this weekend. It is like new, with very little run time. This is a first for me ordering this type of powered engine. Googled how these were used in real life. It appears that they were used to pull a few passenger cars (baggage and coach). Adam, how do you like the one you recently received? As described on the box, will this engine realistically handle an 031 curve? I would have like to purchase an MTH DC-3 detector car, but my layout does not have any 072 radius curves on it.

I've always wanted a Doodlebug. Maybe I'll find one at York if I ever go again.
