I am starting off the New Year right by playing with some trains this morning. Maisy dog decided to pay a visit to see what I was up to. She always puts a smile on my face. She is half dachshund, half Golden Retriever but 100% Lover Dog.

She is half dachshund, half Golden Retriever... Wow...that's a crazy combination! Four golden retrievers have gone through here over the last 25 years...greatest dogs ever. This is Flynn, a one year-old we fostered for 11 months in 2023:

She is an odd combo, but so is her buddy Toby. He is part great Dane, Part Labrador Retriever and some % of Pitbull. He acts and plays mostly like a Lab but has some of the Great Dane clumsiness and stubbornness. Awesome dogs, but they are getting on in years. Toby just turned 12 and Maisy 9.

Our girl will turn ten in May; she's had both knees reconstructed and has a lot of arthritis. She's probably our last Golden, as I'm 67 now and can't imagine handling a big dog when I'm 77 (presuming I'm still here at 77). If I could, I'd get another GR pup now. Instead, I think we'll look for a mid-size mix, maybe something around 40-50 pounds. Hopefully Kenz has at least 2-3 more good years left...she's a hoot.

Goldens apparently have a lot of medical issues. Maisy suffers from allergies, mostly contact related so we need to be careful where she walks, and we need to get her shots once every 6~8 weeks. If we knew she was part Golden before we got her, we may not have. But she is part of the family now and we would do anything for her.

Yes, they do. Our last two suffered catastrophic knee injuries and required some pretty extensive surgical repairs. Hannah lived to be 14 before the Big-C got her (cancer is a problem in the breed), Reily lived to be 12 before cancer got her. Both were pups from local breeders. Kenzie came from a breeder in North Carolina, a rescue of sorts (she left a trail of carnage at a previous owner and had been returned to the breeder). Flynn, who we "fostered" for a friend until his health returned and he could take him back, was a one year-old pup when he showed up, and left at 23 months.
If I could find a six or seven year-old golden in need of a home, I'd go for that, even with all of the potential health issues. They are just outstanding, devoted dogs.

I have two cats, one is Fluffy who is 19 and still in very good health. The other is Widdes a black and white rescue. Both too heavy but great cats. Fluffy is the most gentle cat I ever had. Fluffy is a Tabby and Widdes is a mix Dave Attachments:

We're just dog-sitters for the family now since our little 18-yr-old terrier passed on a few years ago. Now we see this guy on a frequent basis since he's the grand-dog. We're seriously considering making this photo into a poster for the next municipal election....hey, why not federal? Dave P.S. He has no interest in trains...

Once again, I am back with two katz. Have the original one who is going on 14 and doing great. Got a replacement for the Late Great Mr. Meep in September. A black male yearling whom I named Herbert. No real reason other than he responded to it and the name they gave him at the cattery was sort of dooky and he didn't answer to it anyway.
Herbert seems to be fitting in very nicely with his new home and companion kat. He has been extraordinary when it comes to the Christmas stuff and trains under the tree! Hasn't touched a thing! He loves to sit and watch the trains and is fascinated by the movement and sounds.
He still hasn't been downstairs to see the CBL (crappy basement layouts LOL!) yet but that will come with time. Same with letting him roam around my shop down there. Need some time to monitor him around the tools and boxes as I am concerned about him getting into dangerous things. He will learn.
He is different from Mr. Meep and has his own personality and a HUGE pair of lungs! SCREAMS about EVERYTHING! LOL! Sometimes it bugs Miss Ingyow and she just punches him in the face and he shuts up. She is the boss and Mommy Kat now. They get along great together.
Looks like I have another railroad kat.
Christmas was OK. This year has been bad for the whole world I think. So many good people and critter companions passing away. I really hope 2024 is better.
I plan on some new train projects this winter, so there is that.
Happy New Year to everyone.

For about 16 years+ we had five cats: Mistletoe, a months old kitten who I found in the parking lot of a bowling alley in Philadelphia after league night two weeks before Christmas.
Chessie, Peake, Phoebe Snow and Spiderman were all kittens found in a horse barn by our neighbor. Chessie was in the process of being eaten by a tomcat when our neighbor stopped it and brought the others to our house to show us. We ended up adopting them all.
All five were nearly the same age and unfortunately began to pass one by one within two years after we moved to Southern California.
After a year with no fur babies in the house, our niece announced she was going into the army for special ops. She had two cats she bought from a shelter that she couldn’t take with her obviously and her parents couldn’t keep them because they have six very active dogs of various breeds and sizes. In their short little lives they went from a shelter to our nieces apartment and to her parents house and were relegated to a small bedroom because of the dogs. We, I mean my wife volunteered to take care of them (with no intention of giving them back). They arrived a year and a half ago and didn’t react well to their new home. Both Manny and Zoey ran into the bathroom to hide. Upon first look, Manny hissed at me.
It was a bit of an adjustment. Zoey would hide under the bed all day and Manny would attack and bite when attempting to pet him.
After completing boot camp our niece came to visit the cats. They were even pensive with her. Then they watched her leave them for a second time when she had to report back for her next assignment. She visited again during Christmas and they watched her leave again. After that last time there was a transformation. Manny started laying on my chest and between my knees in the recliner. Then started head butting my hand to pet him. Zoey runs over to my feet to be scratched and now they both follow us into whatever room we are in. They decided we are their people.
Now they have taken over the under construction layout as their playground and hangout.

Our current Golden, Kenzie, now 9-1/2 years old: Not much of a train buff...she ignores the under-tree loop and doesn't go downstairs to the basement layout (her choice, not mine).
