Anyone have one of the new Lionchief doodlebugs. There was a review on another site but wanted to ask some questions before paying almost $400 for one. The original MTH version had some road name specific sounds as well as being able to be programmed to make random stops. Can the Lionel version do the same.

I saw a review on Eric's Trains. I wouldn't mind having one.

The Lionel Doodlebug is using MTH molds which they acquired. I have an original MTH Doodlebug 30-2709-1 which came with the Baggage/Coach car also. MTH had a price of 399.00 which I got for 329.00. With Lionel 400.00 price tag, I hope they added a lot of features since the Baggage/Coach car isn't part of the package. I like mine and will have to find it and run it again.

As you can tell by looking at the body shell images, this is Railking tooling not Premier and I am not sure that there was ever a Premier version of these railcars. It’s also LC2 and so basically TMCC and I don’t see from the Eric S. Video that there are any operating improvements over MTH’s product - indeed passenger figures have been eliminated. So for the increased price I am not interested but as Lionel has produced this in a number of railroad liveries they must be expecting to sell a reasonable amount.

I have seen them on YouTube but not in person yet. I don't think they will be a big seller but what do I know. I am passing. Not worth the money they are pricing them at. But that seems to be everything nowadays. I will be limiting purchases in 2024 to only my most wanted items.

These are pretty neat. They made a few different liveries. The Christmas Doodlebug might be fun. I will need to concider that one.

While not exactly a "doodlebug", I made this a few years ago from some old Lionel prewar passenger cars, parts and the running gear from a modern Lionel cheap diesel F Unit running gear and the pilot/cowcatcher from a crushed prewar "coffin" tender. It approximates the appearance of a 1st generation piece of Washington Baltimore & Annapolis railroad inventory. I used a photograph from a book I have on that railroad for guidance. I even have an extra passenger car to use as a "trailer" car. I left the original paint and "patina" to contribute to the look and feel of an original. Added extra interior lighting using all original bulbs and sockets. Front cab windows were cut in by me and interior glazing attached and interior cab light added. So ... I guess that I really created an ORIGINAL "Lionel Doodlebug". PS ... It didn't cost me any $400 to make it either. (Don't forget to click on the images to enlarge them.)

More than a bit of resemblance to the trolley in the Baltimore & Annapolis Short Line pic I use as an avatar. There was actually a detailed model out there, the details on which I haven't been able to track down, but your replica is close enough!
