In another thread started by rocky mountaineer entitled Really Lionel? the topic of the negative impact some influencers may be having not only on prospective or actual buyers, but on manufacturer's perception of their products approval rating among the hobby I stated that the best way to marginalize some of these grip and grin influencers was to identify and promote influencers whose knowledge and impartial product reviews warranted our support. I was concerned that my reply in that thread would be overlooked as the tangent to that topic that it is. Therefor believing that this subject has merit as a stand alone thread here it is. To jump start this thread, my recommendation for a worthwhile influencer is Sean of Sean's Train Depot. He is more of a nuts and bolts guy with an abundance of useful topics/insights for all levels in the hobby. His layout videos show an ingenuity and and originality which is a pleasure to watch. Just recently Sean seems to be getting into product reviews a bit more than I have seen in the past. He reviews what he buys which obviously limits the number of reviews he posts, but he has skin in the game. Sean's series on his standard gauge layout is IMO a master class on how to plan, execute and mid course correct your way to a terrific layout. His videos tend to be on the long side so be prepared to pack a lunch or least have snacks and a beverage close at hand. I am not related to Sean, nor did he pay me to say nice things about him. Did you Sean?

I have no problem whatsoever with any of the YouTube model train influencers. They help keep the hobby going. I do think some of them lean too far on the premium side of the hobby but that is their choice, yet I still enjoy some of their videos but they can't, ahem, influence me to buy at those price points.
I will check out some of Sean's videos. Thanks for the tip!

I have to agree that Sean is one of the best, he just redid his layout to put in a carnival which has turned out very well. Take a look at it. And when he reviews an engine he just doesn't do a unboxing. I don't need to know how to open a box. I just saw a so called review of the new Dreyfus. The engine looks nice but the color is wrong. But it was hardly a problem for the reviewer. Also the stripping is wrong. Beings I'm in not in the same market as the influencers but please point out the good points and the bad. Also drop The box openings! They also seem to gravitate to the most expensive items. RBP seems to be better in reviewing box sets, mpc, and other lower priced items. I like watching the influencers to see how the other half lives and see the trains I will never own. JD Sticks is also another one I will watch anytime. Check him out.

I’m completely out of the loop when it comes to social media influencers - I’m the unreachable demographic I guess. 😜 I’ve no interest in the latest hot item, I run ad-blocker software (and on Facebook too), and I just don’t keep up with the latest trend in anything. 😎 More power to ‘em, but no influence here at all.
Here’s an interesting quote from a fed-up ice-cream vendor (Albeit from 2019) : “Frustrated by self-described social media influencers who kept asking for freebies, the businessman is taking a stand: Not only will he not be scooping complimentary cones, he's intent on charging these so-called "influencers" double.” www.cbc.ca/news/science/pringle-influencers-social-media-1.5207258However, thanks for connecting us with Sean’s channel - much appreciated! 👍👍 Dave

I agree for most part a lot of the influencers are good, But when you claim no one can clean/lubricate an engine as good as you do, or no once is as good as you in maintenance or repairs, your not a help to the hobby, you may be good but when you go that far, you turn me off, and conceded gets you nowhere. They have a following, glad they do, But I will not be part of it.
Most in the hobby are straight forward and do a service for the hobby.

There are lots of videos out there that have great content. Search out guys like Sean who not only do you see his layout he also has tips on locomotives that may have a issue and other tips. Marks Lionel trains is another site that runs new and used trains. He also likes Menards buildings and freight cars. He provides tips and tricks to help you enjoy your trains. If there is an issue with a Menards car he seems to have a correction for it. He runs mostly Lionel. His updates are always interesting. There are some other sites that are just as interesting, though remembering them all is a issue for me. One guy does alot of repaints on Lionel shells and frames with rattle cans. He offers tips on using tape and decaling. His work is amazing.
Check out what is out there. Most of the influencers are just fine if that's what you want but beings I'm not in that kind of collector crowd I kinda lean towards the type I described above.
The whole thing about model trains is to have fun and what ever way you do it is the right way for you.

I am not influenced by these so called influencers I have met Sean and Nick and think they are great guys but I have yet to watch a whole video I guess my attention span isn't conducive to watching videos As for the other guys I know how to open a box, I know how to move a box from point A to Point B and I know the correct way to wear a hat. We also give away trains every year and dont have to advertise that we did because the recipients are the ones we care about not how many people know about it. They care about two things only, How many likes did they get and how many views a video had. They should call them Bloviaters not influencers

I would watch all the 'influencers' videos if ......they posted links to their videos on this forum. I watch almost all videos members post(I probably miss a few)on this forum.

Influence…isn’t that a form of illness? “Open the window and in-flew-encers ….😉”…..😳

I would watch all the 'influencers' videos if ......they posted links to their videos on this forum. I watch almost all videos members post(I probably miss a few)on this forum. Interesting comment about if they posted to this forum. They use to, as Corner Field Hobby did also, But alas they are gone, except JDStucks who still watches this forum. When I ask a couple of the You Tubers why, their response was they still encourage the forum but they were made very uncomfortable by a moderator whom ask them to stop posting as he felt it was only to rack up their views. Kinda a shame as I now go to You Tube and follow them there. I am not saying that is what really happened but what I was told by them. To me, I felt bad being a member as I feel part of the purpose is to PROMOTE THE HOBBY in my view. At least I don't believe I will be banned for saying that here. Maybe?

There feelings were hurt by some comments. I think they could have just brushed it off but they didn't and most of them left. I liked them being here but it wasn't up to me.

I just enjoy watching trains on layouts. I don’t stress over it or read anything into it. I don’t think about being influenced because I want to buy everything anyway.
I believe it’s another way to have fun with the hobby that wasn’t available before the internet.

I have to admit I watched many of the videos made by various You Tubers. But "influencers"? No, not a single video made me want to go out and want it or need to have it. Many of the have to show box openers scenes were boring as were what tool was being used to open box, (this is not suppose to be a Tool Time Tim moment). Get to the product, then get to the good and bad of the product. But you never hear or see the bad of a product. Several months ago, I got an E Mail from someone that follows several sites to tell me that videos I had posted here from YouTube were also by a particular person being posted on the other Forum. I thought it was a coincidence, but after a dozen I realized it wasn't. I guess it's a good way to spread helpful information also.
