Talking to several friends and listening to some talking about Christmas memories when they were young and the gifts they received and looked forward to. Yes, some mentioned Lionel trains, but there were many other gifts they looked forward to. For myself, it was always books first, especially the Whitman HC books then a Chemistry set. When I turned 16, it was to get flying lessons, which I got for Christmas a paid course.
So what were your wishes and receiving gifts?

I always liked science kits, especially electronic science kits. I once got a crystal radio and really enjoyed that gift.

One of the gifts I dreamt about before Christmas and played with for many, many happy hours was a Marx Civil War set. My best friend and I staged many battles on the living room floor that winter and when the weather warmed up we built fortifications outside and fought battles. That went on for a few years before we outgrew playing with toy soldiers.

For me, in addition to trains, it was getting ice hockey equipment. Sticks, gloves, shin pads and skates.
There was an ice skating rink in our neighborhood that would have public hockey sessions early on Sunday mornings at 6am before opening later for regular public skating. My friends and I would meet around 5am and fully dressed in hockey gear we would go to 5:30am Mass and leave our duffel bags in the church entryway. Early Mass was usually a bit streamlined and after it was done we did the ten minute walk to the rink carrying our bags and sometimes a street hockey net then lace up our skates and get after it. When it concluded at 8am we would go home and take naps until noon then go back outside to play street hockey for a few hours.
We always had a street hockey game on the 26th so we could use our new gear.

I outgrew both toy soldiers and trains at about the same time around 12 or 13 years old. I got back into trains a month before my 18th birthday. I’ve found soldiers fascinating but never got back into them. I’ve been interested in the Civil War since I was a child. I love what you have set up, wish I had room for it.

I'm a member of a wargames group; we play mostly naval actions, but have recently started looking at some ACW stuff. I did a lot of this in college and the years shortly thereafter, but got away from it. My interest re-fired over the last fifteen years or so. While I've had toy trains my entire life, model soldiers might be my first love.
