Well it is here and some are online by the usual suspects, it looks really cool. One dealer sold 12 of them along with a separate set of cars. If you have an extra $4,000+ laying around this set is for you.
Come on you guys, fess up, Adam, Traindiesel, I know you want this set.
All kidding around it looks to be a great set, if you or anybody you know bought one, good luck With it and show it off.
Dave

Not I. I have a MTH Triplex and more than enough freight cars. And I paid a lot less.
By the way, DAVE, the Triplex I bought was YOUR fault after showing me the one you had!!

$4k is a lot of money. I can get a top end amateur radio tranciever for less than that.
I’ll stick to the used market and I prefer MTH Modern anyhow.
I will say, it is a nice set though.

The set is not a Triplex it includes a big boy and a bunch of cars including 3 VL and a caboose. Also so it is not my fault you bought a triplex, your easy when it comes to trains!! besides you better check yours because remember mine had zinc rot on top of the boiler. Adam, what would you rather have, A big boy set or more ham equipment besides you have me to talk to! Dave

For 4000.00 I can buy the set or take a trip to Germany or maybe even Australia. 4000.00 I can rent a plane, pay fuel and landing fees for several trips to family in Illinois. 4000.00 I could even purchase maybe 8 or 9 engines on the secondary market that run and are complete. OR, I could spend 4000.00 plus don't forget SALES TAX, also SHIPPING COST and maybe come with a box of contents that rattle and roll with loose or broken parts floating around?? Going to be a hard decision!

If you have an extra $4,000+ laying around this set is for you. ... You had me going there for a second, Dave. I thought you might be referring to the Triplex Super Set, which certainly would have been a surprise early delivery. But then again, that set tends to come in around a mere $3,600 street-price. I do plan to buy a Vision Line D&RGW Triplex (if Lionel gets the colors right). But I'll build my own "super set" with my choice of freight cars -- many of which I already own.
Having said that, I do wonder what the "allure" is for these big box sets. I understand to some degree, when Lionel offers specialty sets like their UP rocket-booster set. But some of these other offerings packaged with a Vision Line steam locomotive means we're looking at $3K outlay EASY... and as you've noted this Big Boy Super Set pushes $4K+.
According to Lionel, they're saying folks are demanding these bigger and higher-priced sets. All I can do is shake my head when I hear that. But if they sell what they're making, then I guess everyone is happy.
I hope many who buy these sets actually ENJOY them. However, I do sometimes wonder what percentage of these sets are purchased, because buyers are comfortable simply knowing the value on the secondary market will often be significantly higher than their original purchase price. Admittedly, it's a risky gamble if that's their sole motivating factor. But MINT Vision Line locomotives and sets definitely appear to be in-demand these days.

I can only speak for myself but the allure of these big box sets to me are the separate components of the set. Not usually included in sets are the Vision Line freight cars. Box cars, reefers, tank cars and the talking caboose. However you can for the most part buy these items along with the locomotives separately and build your own set over time to spread out the cost outlay. There’s going to be some cars only included in a set but that’s not an incentive for me to buy.
I guess I would see it differently if I didn’t have as many trains as I do. These big ticket sets would be a good way to go for those with the disposable income that are getting started in the hobby. There must be more of them than we thought.

I have to ask, since its 2 words I encounter many times, but mostly on forums as this. May I ask for those in the know, What the heck is "Disposable income"? Is this money that is dirty, no longer needed, or comes from a heist? I would be grateful for anyone that has money that is disposable for any reason and no longer needed or wanted, just put it in a box and ship it to me.

Josef You have been sent disposable income several times and NEVER admitted to getting it. Oh Wait, it was sent by USPS, UPS or FedEx so it is out there with Brian's York Train order. Somewhere in limbo land. I would LOVE to be in limbo land. You would have everything you ever need including disposable income. LOL

FYI... Mr. Muffin's Trains is offering a unique promotion to those who might be interested in this set: Steve is essentially offering you the choice of Vision Line Big Boys he has in-stock as your preference to swap out the Big Boy #4008 that Lionel is shipping with this set. So if you liked the idea of this "super set" but would prefer a different Big Boy locomotive heading up the train, now is the time to make your move. I'm not aware of any other dealer who's officially announced this offer. Cool idea for dealers with extra sets (and Big Boy locomotives) in their inventory.
