I shot this video at the Melbourne, FL train show on 9-7-19. The layout is the Vero Beach Model Railroader's 4x8 traveling O gauge layout. I used my smart phone in a gondola car to capture the video. I plan on doing something similar on my home layout. I think it will give a different and fun perspective.

Nice to see another 4x8 with so much detail.

That is a good idea using a gondola to hold the cell phone.

Nice to see another 4x8 with so much detail. We tried to build a layout that just about even a beginner could look at and feel that they could build. Plus, it's a lot of fun.

That is a good idea using a gondola to hold the cell phone. I can't take credit for it. A friend in the VBMRs came up with the idea.

I think I saw a DIY in the latest Classic Toy Trains issue for a flatcar with a mount for smart phone for the purpose of recording. But just using a gondola car seems much simpler, but may require getting creative to stabilize and aim the camera properly.

The phone rests against the side of the gondola while a block of wood keeps is in position. A large rubber band hold the phone to the block of wood. I used the one my friend made but I'm going to make one myself. When I do I'll post a picture of it to show how it works.

That's excellent. I once taped a phone between the cab and tender of my FEF-3, which smokes like the Dickens, to record a circuit of a carpet layout of yesteryear viewed over the top of the boiler. The smoke puffing came out great but there was nothing much else to see but the track ahead and the furniture it was laid around! The back of the La-Z-Boy looked like a sheer cliff face though.

Videos like that tend to work better on a scenicked layout. I remember seeing one a G scale guy made where the train ran through the house, then outside and eventually back into the house. Because it was such a long and varied ride it was interesting even though there was no scenery to see.

I think I saw that video. It went through the house and out in the yard then back in the house.

Pretty cool. I like the curves because the video slows down then goes faster in the straights. Neat.

Pretty cool. I like the curves because the video slows down then goes faster in the straights. Neat. That explains why I got dizzy watching it!
