I remember the Lionel original from the late-1950s or early/mid-1960s. A neat accessory. We needed one of these when that Chinese balloon flew over the U. S. You know, the "weather" balloon...

If I remember correctly when Lionel did the commercial back in the early 60's it would pop the balloon. My guess they must of had a needle of some sort on the tip of the rocket,

It looks like Lionel repurposed yet another car. The original car was the #3470 Aerial Target Launching Car. It has a small air pump which keeps a small balloon aloft and you shoot at it with one of your missile launching cars/platforms. The missiles didn't pop the balloon, they just knocked it off of its air cushion. So, from aerial target we now go to weather balloon. Anyway, here's one of the originals.
