Well, it's still not obvious to me but the difference does not appear to be in the number of windows! In fact I think that K-Line used the same extrusions for these cars and the 2" difference was in the length of the vestibules. That was also the difference between many of their 18" and 21" cars and the same goes for Lionel (who I think used K-Line tooling for their aluminum 21" cars). Anyway your visitor was extremely sharp-eyed and my excuse is that mine aren't what they used to be.

Btw the 19 set was made two years after the 16 set. The only difference is the sounds and crew talk that was a bit better.

Dave I think that I knew that as I have the 19 set plus a powered B unit and am putting them on the tracks today. The 19 set to me is the height of Lionel's diesels apart from the VL GE Evos made some years later.

The 19 set to me is the height of Lionel's diesels apart from the VL GE Evos made some years later. I believe the trains with Tmcc from 2000 to about 2006 are some of the best Lionel has ever made. The build quality is top notch. Unfortunately as time went on the build quality has gone down. Sad state of affairs.
