Everybody likes scale model steam locomotives, right? What else in model railroading compares with watching an articulated steam engine roll by, fast or slow, side-on with all its running gear churning – especially if it has booming sound to go with all that mechanical action? OK, I know others will have different ideas but my inspiration is that earlier this week I was thinking again about Brian Vaill’s liking for Santa Fe trains and in particular this model:
This is the original Legacy AT&SF 2-10-10-2, the very first model in the Vision Line. I can’t remember how long ago this was made. I got mine much later in the secondary market and it had to go to an expert techie to be put right after Lionel’s own efforts failed. Here’s a whimsical 28 seconds of its main operating features, which was made when I took over an emancipated child’s former bedroom to use as a train room:
Big steamers with the sound and smoke effects to go with them are probably my favorite model trains. In the past I have known some truly legendary smokers and a few Lionel engines that were anemic in the smoke department. These two Legacy versions of the UP FEF-3, made several years apart, are examples of the extremes, the early Legacy one on the top being the most prolific smoker I have ever seen:
The Erie Triplex shown side on in this photo is actually an MTH HO version; the Premier O scale version of this Triplex is seriously impressive to see running. That O scale engine is one of the models Lionel intends to produce as a VL offering. I await that with more trepidation than anything else . . .
Finally, in terms of steamer side views this is one of my all-time favorites although I have never found out who took the photo, where or when - although I think it was in 2006 or slightly later judging by the O scale models put on the main driving rod:
Oh, call me a dinosaur but did I mention that I like steamers with WHITEWALLS? (And that I am not a fan of weathering?) If you count the turtleback tender, the 2-10-10-2 has 36 whitewalls.
