I recently pulled the trigger on a Pat's Trains custom-run Lionel Legacy Dreyfus done up in the fantasy Black Bonnet after seeing the loco on one of Pat's YouTube channel videos. Beautiful sight to see the Black Bonnet paint scheme in HIGH-GLOSS black and red!!! Plus a splendidly detailed coal load in the centipede tender is a real treat. Note the outstanding rivet detail on the tender as well. Pat's Trains is really becoming THE go-to dealer for Black Bonnet livery products.
I know the Black Bonnet isn't for everyone, but it IS nice to see Lionel get something right amidst other chaotic offerings lately. And a HUGE congrats to Pat for keeping a close eye on this project to ensure proper colors. Great products need a product advocate. So let's thank Pat for championing this project. The results are magnificent!!!
Here are some quick iPhone snapshots of another great custom-run on my layout from last night. Enjoy!!!
Given Atlas O's recent announcements of passenger cars (based on MTH Premier tooling), I wouldn't be surprised to see Pat offering a full complement of Black Bonnet streamlined 18" coaches. But that's just a hunch on my part. So we shall see. The 18" sized coaches have become my preferred passenger cars, as they simply look best on my layout’s O-54 to O-102 curves.
After Lionel's latest debacle with their 21" North Pole Central Christmas set, I'm done with Lionel for 21" passenger trains. And the Golden Gate Depot 21"-inchers — now priced at $350/car — are simply WAY out of my price league these days. Sigh...

Now let me recap. 1. Train Loft Big Boy 2. The Lionel Store Dreyfuss Hudson Exclusive 3. Black Bonnet Dreyfuss Hudson Are you printing money in the basement or kiting checks? Don’t forget the Triplex and the returned Yueltide” set. David, it’s a good thing you’re cutting back on your purchases!! ( Don’t worry, I know how that goes!)
The Black Bonnet livery does look great on the Dreyfuss. Good luck and have lots of fun with it!

When I first saw the Dreyfus on pats email I said if I had the cash I would have bought it. It is that attractive. Not a black bonnet fan but your (David) Dreyfus is the one every one should buy.

I have no problem with fantasy paint schemes, but, I do wonder why they used a NYC engine instead of the Blue Goose.

It could have only been worse if they'd badged it Penn Central, lol.

I have no problem with fantasy paint schemes, but, I do wonder why they used a NYC engine instead of the Blue Goose. Sir James, I suspect it's because Lionel catalog'd a "War" Bonnet Santa Fe Northern in 2023 Big Book, which was also recently delivered to dealers with its latest Blue Goose offering. I didn't purchase that one, because I already had a slightly similar Black Bonnet steam locomotive from Pat's Trains done a couple of years ago. The Dreyfus is an entirely different model, so it was a chance to introduce something new using the Black Bonnet motif. Just my thoughts... I have no insider knowledge.
Speaking of the Blue Goose though... Lionel sadly screwed up the coloring on that offering once again. I have the original MTH Blue Goose passenger cars that are splendid. I sold the MTH Blue Goose engine some time ago, when Lionel first catalog'd THEIR Blue Goose as a Northern... and I prefer Legacy over DCS. Silly me though... because even Lionel's first Blue Goose offering isn't a perfect match to MTH's passenger cars, but it's workable. The second Blue Goose offering from Lionel is an even worse match to MTH's passenger cars. I brought one passenger coach to Nicholas Smith Trains and placed it along side Lionel's latest Blue Goose steamer on display. I didn't even take a picture of it, because the colors were so far off. I just don't understand what Lionel is thinking some days. Looked great in the catalog, but the as-delivered colors were WAY different. Wait... have we heard that story before???

Hey folks,
Here are some photos of Lionel’s latest Black Bonnet Dreyfus with one of the K-Line 18” Aluminum Black Bonnet passenger cars I snagged several years ago. A rare perfect color match made in toy train heaven — especially considering the long time between product releases and different manufacturers. I’ll take it gladly!!!
