There was a very good segment on the Alaska Railroad on "CBS Sunday Morning" last Sunday: I was particularly fascinated, because earlier this year my wife and I had joined our daughter and her family on an NCL Alaska cruise. To board the cruise ship, we first flew into Anchorage (while there, we visited the museum shown in the video, which had a really wonderful exhibit on the 100 year history of the ARR, including this roughly N scale model of an ARR switching yard: ) and then took the Alaska Railroad itself down to the port of Seward: From the segment, it sounds like we should have made time to take the same train north to the end of the line as well! [While in Alaska, we also took the White Pass Railroad deep into the Yukon . . . . . . but that's a story for another post!]

Thanks for the video, and the pics from your vacation, Steve. Alaska looks like an interesting place to visit. Oh, for sure! In addition to the two railroad-related opportunities (three, if you count the museum exhibit!) and the actual cruise liner experience, there were whales, bears, salmon, and plenty of breath-taking scenery to observe, as well as in-person and in-depth info on the extensive native American cultures. Highly recommend . . .

I saw the Sunday show and thought it was a nice piece with morning coffee to get away from the news. A few years ago there was a whole tv series on the line. I enjoyed that a lot also. I'm still amazed at the number of people that choose to live without so many things to make life easier. and . . . Not one of them had time for model railroading while trying to survive.
