In our home, for decades since we been married and even as a child when I lived with my parents, music was always playing. It could be from the radio, record player, etc. But music was always there. The day after Thanksgiving, the wife and I would have Christmas music playing and mostly from our vinyl collection. As long as I can remember as a child, my Mothers favorite song has always been Silent Night and O Christmas Tree which she would sing to us often. My mother had a beautiful voice and many times driving back from Christmas Eve services she would sing Silent Night as dad drove and us kids in the back seat would listen as mom sang. This is the History behind this song and how it become such a favorite.

Great post. Lots of people know that Salzburg was the birthplace of Mozart but far less know that the iconic Christmas song "Silent Night Holy Night" was written just outside Salzburg by a priest and a musician.

Probably 25 years ago now, I got the chance to go to one of Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion shows at the old Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul. I had stopped over for a couple days on a trip home from the west coast to visit a former work colleague, a guy I'd known for quite a few years who was then having some health issues. When he knew I was coming, he had managed to get a couple tickets to the show the weekend before Christmas, knowing I was a fan. The show was terrific, but to close it out, Keillor led the audience in an a cappella rendition of Silent Night. If there were 3000 people in the audience that night, I'd guess 2800 of them were singing. Certainly one of the most moving things I've experienced in my life. It left a mark.
