Tried to post photo of my workbench but had some trouble. Here is my Craftsman four draw rolling tool bench. It holds all my tools and can be stored underneath my layout.

That is a great way to store your workbench.

My workbench for train and scenery projects, much to my wife's chagrin, is the dining room table.

I have two workshop areas, one my all-purpose old-fashioned workshop (with the quotidian power and hand tools and supplies for general household use and support), and part of a nearby but separate space that has previously served (and to some extent still serves) as computer/office space and exercise room, which I have appropriated to store and deploy some of the supplies and materials I've used in connection with model railroading. The main work area is a roughly four by eight foot built-in table top filling an alcove, with shelving units at each end and, most recently, a set of adjustable shelves (acquired from a Freecycle donor) supported by brackets attached to the back wall, for storage of boxes of tools and materials for model railroading projects. It's a constant struggle to clear and organize the workshop space, and I usually "declare victory" as soon as I am able to create enough space to tackle the extant project! Don't have a good pan shot of the work area, but here's a close-up of an area in its usual state of disarray:
