Dos anyone think that if Lionel had announced the CAB3 with a handheld remote that the rise in value of the CAB2 systems would have happened. Prior to the announcement by Lionel the CAB 2 systems could be had for between $250 and $300.

Prior to the announcement by Lionel the CAB 2 systems could be had for between $250 and $300. My short answer is no, the price hike would not have happened, but it was never on the cards that Lionel would produce a new handheld as they have been trailing an app and tablet/phone-based system for years. Someone a lot more familiar than me with the technology has said in another thread that Lionel could have produced a new handheld remote despite Howard Hitchcock saying (for years) that they can't. My guess is that they decided it would be cheaper for them not to. In any case, the fact that CAB2s are not being made and the CAB3 is nowhere in sight accounts for the premium placed on the remaining CAB2s.

You don't need the cab2 to run your trains. The cab1 and cab1L can run tmcc, legacy, conventional, Lionchief plus and 2.0. Do not over pay for the cab2, it just a cash grab by some sellers, let them Rot!!!!

Dave Well, I agree up to the point that you can just run trains around the track without access to all Legacy operating features but that's not what I do as it would defeat the purpose of many such features. My issue is with there being no easy path for people starting out in Legacy, which is still made for CAB2 operation. There's no way for someone who has not already got a CAB2 to have a fully functional handheld remote without paying extortionate prices. I don't think that's a situation actually Lionel set out to create but it certainly won't encourage new Legacy users.
