OK, I’m afraid that my starting theme for this week’s side shot show is unfinished business. I can’t remember how long ago I started a project on this car but it is actually older than the OGF!
Pictured is the UP City of San Francisco lounge/observation car that was the signature feature of a Lionel 21” car set from several years ago. The real thing is part of the UP Heritage Fleet. My wish was for some other O gauge manufacturer to do these cars, preferably Golden Gate Depot, but that never happened. However, Lionel’s effort is not to be sneezed at because the dome and interior are prototypical – except that they have zero passengers and are a bland yellow color.
Anyway, the thing that I am most pleased with from my efforts is the dome seating area although it is a fantasy scheme:
There is no shortage of historical info about this and similar dome cars, including this based on UP advertising from days gone by:
The plan shows a bar area in the belly/under-dome area and I went to town on that to create a patriotic theme although the cash register price is deliberately way out of date:
The observation seating area is fully populated including by a partying passenger I call Red Nose Man:
This project involves a lot of extra lighting in the bar and lounge areas and my usual messy wiring is hidden from view under the floors:

The problem is that I have been unable to finish the illuminated forward lounge shown to the left of the last photo because when test-fitting the car back together, something is binding on the dome stairs/seating area. I’ve decided that I will have to add some extra screws to hold the whole assembly together. In fact, the car came stock without two long screws at the tail end that the design provided for, but double-sided tape was used instead. Go figure that (I deduce Lionel factory cheapskates). I have not got around to remedying that yet but hope to do so this Christmas season. Watch this space for the very long overdue finished product.
