There's another thread on the Forum about exactly when to start the Christmas train season and the consensus led by the Master (PTC Brian) seems to be November 1. So this is a little early but there was a specific reason for it - the visit of some youngsters to our household. That meant that I decided to put on the tracks the most colorful and illuminated rolling stock I have got behind what I treat as the Christmas engine, a Lionel #6001 fantasy grey scheme NYC Niagara:
Every time I unbox this car set I am fearful because MTH's LED strings are very fragile, have a reputation for failing and are not replaceable with the stock you can source from even the best hobby LED suppliers. However this set has stood up since 2018 and you will note that the engine runs with a wreath on its nose:
I've had to replace the original wreath recently with something very festive:
Now the little person for whom this was mainly intended doesn't have (at barely 4 months of age) the attention span to appreciate it, or not yet, but we had another visitor just a few years older who did the usual youngster's thing of getting down on the floor to look into the cars and saying "wow" when spotting that there are "little people" inside:
Not that any of this is a patch on the real SP Christmas train:
But I still like it.

One from the archives, my Lionel 1681: This loco was a box of bits when found at a meet down in Arbutus, Maryland...Don Carver helped me get it back into running shape. Having survived the depths of the Great Depression, we just had to bring it back.

I'll bet that is one nice view with the house lights off and my mind says oh my how does the carpet keep itself clean HaHaHa! Yes, it looks quite something in a darkened room and No, the carpet does nothing to help me maintain it. The problem with running a die cast steamer is that because the track is not nailed down, it actually pushes it around. Plus, because I use K-Line SuperSnap track the friction/movement makes the contacts twist and turn such that the voltage is very inconsistent across a room-size circuit. Still, it's better than nothing. Actually the carpet is pretty tough stuff and does not show track marks when I take the track apart.

I don't have many shelf queens but do have some. They are special to me and occasionally get on the tracks (I am overdue to give them a run). This is in my office where I work about 3 days a week. It's nice to be able to look at them during hard days at work. My first train ever. Santa delivered this as part of the James Gang set when I was 10. One of my daughters gave me the masterpiece sitting behind it a few years ago for Christmas. Feel free to make an offer on the painting but I can tell you that it is a one of a kind and you likely cannot afford it. Some others sitting on a shelf.

All really nice, Brother Adam, especially the James Gang set. BTW, "James Gang" is what I call my son's in-laws . . .
