With all the talk of the high cost of trains from predominately Lionel, it behooves me to congratulate them when they offer a product which IMO represents good if not great value in a product which many of us might not otherwise consider.
Enter 6-84719 Santa Fe Super Chief starter set.
A two can motor A unit with 3 passenger cars (a starter set rarity) having seating and interior lighting. It has track and a wall wart power supply which many of us have no use for, even then this is one nice value packed set IMO.
Lionel must think so as well as with the exception of expansion packs which seem to have gone the way of the dodo, this set has had add on cars issued; baggage and vista dome.
An inexpensive but very responsive hand held remote is included as well as a Blu Tooth option. At $399 what is not to like?
Of course being the over achiever that I am (sarcasm) I have obtained a complete consist of a previous iteration of this set which has red and yellow striping on the passenger cars just for some extra razzle dazzle.
Pop a few screws on the passenger cars and you can put a couple of packs of Bachmann truncated (no legs) seated passengers in place for a more realistic presentation.
I am quite smitten with this set and declare it a total success for the purpose for which it was intended; selling the sizzle of model railroading.
It is the best $399.00 I have spent on trains in a very long time; and a passenger set of all things to boot.

It is a great set. I have it, added two more passenger cars, the dome and baggage car, and love it.

I don’t have this set, I’m not a Santa Fe fan, but I agree that it’s an excellent value. You get the locomotive, passenger cars, track and wall wart transformer for the price of an engine. Lionel hit a home run with this one.

Wow, good deals! I'm still recovering from my York purchases not to mention getting the stink eye from my wife if I bought them.

I believe it was either 2012 or 2013 when Lionel put out the Lone Ranger train set. This included a 40x60 Fastrack, transformer, sound baggage car, a smoking 4-4-0. Also additional figures and the bobbing Lone ranger and outlaw car and the horse car. A then Hobby Store which is now defunct had 2 stacks set up in aisle as well on the top of shelf behind check out. I estimated there were no less then 50 of these sets. A week later, they were all sold out and couldn't get anymore from Lionel. This was a month before Christmas. He was selling these for 139.00. Now E Bay sellers are asking up to 600.00. Hobby Lobby local store also had these and sold out. Wonder if Lionel is aware if you make the sets complete out of the box and affordable, they may have more sales and future customers?
