I just picked up some MTH buildings for our layout - we are starting to be overrun with empty boxes. Curious what everyone does with their empty boxes?

I saved locomotive boxes and put the rest, rolling stock boxes, building boxes, etc, into recycling. It had gotten to the point that I didn't have room to store all the boxes.

One of the interesting facts of being a member in good standing of the Broadloom Conspiracy layout builders is I don't have any empty boxes. When the CFO - Chief Floor Officer - says it's time, I just tear everything down and return the items to their boxes which were only empty for the lifespan of that particular reincarnation of the Ophir and Oblivion.

I agree with Joe, except I keep the engine boxes and car boxes and dump the rest. No need to keep the rest. What I do keep is under the platform. Dave

I keep boxes for Engines, freight cars, passenger cars, as well as cabooses. Most of them are under the layout, but also I have some on a storage shelf and in a large plastic container.

Take a look at Eric Siegel's (Eric's Trains) video on how he stores his stuff. He has 2 storage units. In our area based upon the approximate cost of a units he rents, he is shelling out about $500-$600 a month to store empty boxes.I don't care how wealthy he may be for his sake I hope the rates are lower in Georgia!
To date I am saving all boxes, packing material etc, but I have all modern stuff. I can tell you with confidence that if you or your survivors sell anything original boxes, packing material and manuals help get better prices.

I hang onto locomotive and set boxes; everything else goes in the recycle bin. Most of my stuff is prewar tinplate, so original boxes is a non-issue.

Oldenginehouse, As with most folks, I have my engines in individual boxes (not original). I don’t have many boxes, as I buy on the secondary market for operating. I do have some special items (rolling stock and accessories) that I have original boxes for. These empty boxes I put small into larger. I suppose that you can undo the individual boxes if they have flaps and flatten them, and store them under the layout, and re-tape if needed – unless you are into collecting, then you may want to consider other methods. How ironic that this came up as a topic. My wife and I have a second and third layout in the basement. (HO, G/O/HO) Anyhow I mentioned we needed to clean out the basement. After two months we have made huge progress. Built the house in 2001 and moved in in 2002. Since we were married in 2000 and each had our own house we had two houses of STUFF in the basement. Anyhow back to boxes. All and I mean ALL (I saved all my boxes. Even Switch Boxes) are under my table upstairs. (pays to have a 30x65 layout) Anyhow we have industrial shelving in the basement and Since the Children and Grandchildren come at Thanksgiving to celebrate Christmas, I am going to give each a Manufacturer and type and have them run two flights of steps and re stack the boxes by Manufacturer (Lionel, Atlas, And MTH (Rail King, Premier) by number in order. All buildings will go together but by Manufacturer and Number also. Includes Menard's. All Power and track will be also done in a separate section. This will help me check my inventory sheets as I know I missed several items. If I do sell anything 95% of what I have I have the boxes and sometimes even the shipper box. BUT THE TAKE UP A HUGE AMOUNT OF SPACE!!!

I don't always save all my boxes even though I feel I probably should. Some of my trains I know I will never get rid of. The boxes I do save get put into a plastic storage bin and stacked in the basement.

I don’t like having the boxes around. But I know we have at least one more move in us (Not counting the move underground). So I’m going to keep all the boxes until after the next move to keep them protected.
For now everything is in the garage.
