from the 1 that is automatically assigned to a number that we choose between 1 - 99. I do not see the procedure in Scott’s manual.
We could guess but given the cost of these engines, we want it correct the first time.
Thanks for the help.

Isn't there a run program switch under the cab? I believe that is were my PRR Q1 switch was located.

This must be a TMCC engine so the process is the same as for Lionel. (I have looked at the only 3rd Rail manual I have in reach and I see that it’s not clear on this fundamental point.)
Turn track power off.
With loco on the track, set RUN/PGM switch to PGM.
Power up track with TMCC/Legacy command base and remote on.
Press ENG on the remote and select the engine number you want to use.
Press SET. A sound or light flash should indicate engine number has taken.
Power off track. Wait a few seconds, set RUN/PGM switch to RUN.
Engine ID is now set.
If you are using Legacy, you’ll need to make further settings in the INFO section of the engine ID. This follows the Legacy manual for TMCC engines, which is available online. With my 3rd Rail engines, I use CAB1 mode and Railsounds.
3rd Rail manuals always include a section about setting speed steps. it’s generally on page 3 of the manual. I suggest you just get your engine running before you get into this.

My engines have the run/program switches in different places but I can find.
I agree that the instructions are not clear. As best as I can tell, this is primarily Cab 1 and railsounds with a later adjustment for speed steps. My problem was the lack of an exact sequence to follow and the choice to make if we are running Legacy that deals with smoke, strobe lights, and something else. I think I am going to go with smoke and be real careful to be where I can turn the transformer off.
Thanks for the help. I guess that Scott takes it for granted since he does this all the time.

Bill, what engine(s) have you got that you are trying to set up? I have got 3rd rail steamers and diesels and the process is similar in both, depending on how old the engines are. As usual, specific engine names would assist. I’ve recently had to load a number of old engines in a new CAB2 remote but they all took correctly. From another post of yours I wonder if you are in a similar situation. P.S. Neither Lionel nor 3rd Rail update their manuals often, and Lionel will cut and paste info between theirs.

We have a number of 3rd Rail and Lionel engines that we have not taken the time to load since the layout really wasn’t suitable to do so. We are to the point with the first level that we need to test different engines, etc to be sure that the bugs are out (nope, they aren’t).
All the MTH engines were loaded in October and run. This week I have been loading Lionel steamers and am about done with them for now. The next items on the list are a Sunset K-2 Baby J 4-8-2 and a Y-3 2-8-8-2, #2034. Then we go to diesels.
I just got off U-tube (how did we do without it) and that had several OGR discussions and the advice to download and print the applicable ERR instructions with the link provided. Makes sense to me. The next OGR discussion gave the exact keystrokes to use.
This is probably what I need to succeed. I will try that in the AM after I get back from a 7:00 AM appointment and will get back to you then.
Thanks so much for the help.

Happy it worked out, Bill. I have had no issues in programming 3rd Rail engines.
