For the most part, I have to build the inventory for the new layout from scratch. Everything I had with respect to train stuff was in use.
The last two days I concentrated on Department 56 Buildings. There are nine that I purchased from NCC President Brandon. He is also a dealer and gave me a great buy. These are all part of their new 2023 line with one exception, Nighthawks. The Big Crab Cake Emile will recognize it immediately. It is a Philadelphia landmark and rare in the D56 world. I am excited about this one as I have looked for it for some time.
Each building was carefully chosen as they are each outstanding. If your goal is to build a great layout, you need great inventory. Theses structures will more than meet that goal.
Once I start a project, I don't just sit around.

I like your approach and use it often. Visualize, make a rough drawing with dimensions, etc. (I've even made rough cardboard mock-ups). Purchase items needed for completion and add to if needed. Can't wait to see final results.

Looking forward to seeing the progress on the new layout!
The Department 56 ‘Nighthawks’ building is a great one emulating the painting by Edward Hopper. I have two of them.
The painting of the Nighthawks diner according to Hopper was created from a local diner in his neighborhood of Greenwich Village in Manhattan. The Phillies Cigar sign is a brand of cigar that was manufactured in Philadelphia by Bayuk Cigars, Inc. My Grandmother worked for Bayuk’s until she retired in 1970.

Can't wait to see final results. Although I like the approach I'm more likely to build the platform to the space I have and then visually look to see how the track will be laid and where and how the scenics will be done. I always buy the buildings I like and then fit them in. I never know how it will turn out. If I find new buildings, I have no qualms in replacing another building with a new favorite. Not everybody's way of doing things but it works for me and keeps it interesting. Dave

Brian, when I purchased this building, I immediately thought of you. I have a primo spot for it as well. How about "Brian's Corner"?

Now I don’t have to go standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona!

There are many on the OGF that are an inspiration to me. Brian stands out. He tells it as he sees it and has a terrific sense of humor. He should have a corner. Just so happens there are two that will hang out on this corner.
