So I am ruling the 747 out and will look at the 746. Does anyone know the shank length dimension difference between the 746 and the 742? Also is there an offset long shank coupler available? Going by the dimensions on the Kadee website, I make the difference 1/4" (16/64ths). In what Kadee currently offer in O scale couplers, I don't see anything listed as offset: www.kadee.com/o-scale-couplers-c-272_253_254/I am in the same boat as you regarding the UP Excursion Cars; no one else has made the dome cars with accurate domes. It's a slow process detailing them one-by-one. I have absolutely no interest in any of the other Lionel 21" ABS cars. They are not a patch on the older aluminum cars, or GGD's products.

I think the 746 is the best bet. Except for the end observation car. Which I will have to see what looks best. Its sad that you have to invest in another 100 dollars to get good couplers.

It's sad that you have to invest in another 100 dollars to get good couplers. Agreed, and not to mention the time it takes to replace them. Even so, your approach may be less time-consuming overall than re-positioning the existing kinematic couplers and of course you get rid of the coupler opening mechanism, which is unsightly and prone to failure.
