At York the short time I was there I found a nice Lionel dash 9 with TMCC w/odyessy that was like new. It was made in 2001. After taking a look at it I was shocked to see how detailed it was. Nice warning placards all over the sides and top. Very nice detail thru out. Also the build quality was amazing imo. This engine is almost 23 years old but yet it is more detailed that some are today, WHY? today's diesel locomotives are more refined but are they that much more then they are?
I would say that Lionel TMCC locomotives from about 2001 to 2007 are worth a look for many reasons. Also early Legacy locomotives are worth a look from 2007 to about 2015 The number one reason is build quality, Build quality imo has taken a dive since around 2015+
What are your thoughts?

I have to agree David. And it isn't only Lionel!

I have 3 TMCC from that time frame and all 3 have had issues. 2 of the 3 have been fixed and in use, the 3rd I decided not to fix and keep for parts. 2 had board issues and the other had mechanical issue. I have thought buying another engine from that time frame but decided not too.

Nothing is Perfect, there will always be failure. Anything made by people will fail. But I think overall the products made by Lionel in that era were better then now. The build quality, from design, production and delivery was much better, not perfect but better.
This is why I said late TMCC and early legacy are some of the best products they have made. Remember this my opinions, I could be wrong!

The high point of diesels for me was the VL GE Evo models, both the demonstrator and the CP versions. They are early Legacy still with modular boards, and some diesels (ES44ACs) were made with die cast bodies. Production numbers seem to have been pretty low but Lionel did some innovations that you simply don't find with later models. I have no doubt that development and manufacturing costs, plus squeezing the likes of us on prices, played a major part in this downward trend.
In my case, I won't buy these older models including early Legacy because of Lionel's lack of a replacement part support for them. Before this started, I did lay in some replacement boards for my Evo but that's probably not going to save it if it goes bad because I don't have a clue about how to diagnose and replace any one of the main boards!

I have three TMCC engines. One works perfectly, one doesn't have sound anymore and one is being fixed to replace the cherry switch (chuffing sound). All three look good cosmetically.
