If your a black bonnet fan I hope you contacted Pats trains and ordered the new Dreyfus hudson in the black bonnet. If not your too late because he reached the magic number 40 to get them made. He may have a few extras coming so give him a call..
I JUST DONT GET IT but whom am I to rain on someone's favorite train, I don't get it but hey that's just me!!

I don’t geddit either (nor do I get why people are opting for the VL Big Boy reissue), but I see that Pat has sold out the 40 he was seeking reservations for. I would not be surprised if he added more to meet demand. This model is no bargain at $1,699 but obviously has real appeal to some people. I have a couple of freight cars in the Black Bonnet scheme but that’s enough for me.

I see that Pat has sold out the 40 he was seeking reservations for. I would not be surprised if he added more to meet demand. This model is no bargain at $1,699 . . . I'm quoting myself because I'm mildly pleased to see that my prediction was right: Pat's Trains circulated the following this morning:
"Due to overwhelming demand, we have reached out to Lionel and secured 10 additional units for our custom run Santa Fe Black Bonnet LEGACY J3 Dreyfus. Originally, this run was to be 40 pieces only. It sold out so quickly, we were shocked! On top of that, there was still demand for more. This is why we decided to attempt to get some additional units from Lionel for those that may still want one and did not have the chance to pre-order. With 50 pieces being made, it is still a very limited locomotive! The remaining 10 are available on a first-come, first-served basis until they are gone. There will be no further increase to the number being produced."

As much as I like the Dreyfus Hudson, red and black just don't do it for me. It was good seeing you and your wife yesterday, hope you had a good show.
I gotta give Pat credi,he sells the heck out of the black bonnet scheme.

Sadly, I'm sure more than a few of those Black Bonnet Dreyfus steamers are being bought by folks expecting to flip them. Personally, I detest that part of this hobby... and want no part of playing the shyster game. If I buy something like this, it's because I enjoy the item being produced. And if I sell it down the line, it's gonna be sold at a fair price. But increasing numbers of folks are buying "limited" production items... then a couple of months after there are no pieces to be found on the regular market, they throw their speculative purchase onto eBay... and they watch buyers trip over themselves outbidding each other. More power to 'em... but no thank you.
Back to Pat though... wouldn't surprise me to see Pat offering some Black Bonnet passenger cars in the not-too-distant future to go along with this Dreyfus. They'd be a natural for the same audience.

I gotta give Pat credi,he sells the heck out of the black bonnet scheme. Dave Likewise, Dave. Good seeing you... and Joe on Saturday at the ATMA show.
ATMA is ALWAYS a great toy train show. Can't believe I've been attending that show -- mostly as an enthusiast -- for 50 years now. Where does the time go??? I only started selling at ATMA the year or two before COVID hit.
Always fun to observe people and their buying habits. Last November, the 8AM early bird line for Saturday wrapped around to the back of Agriculture Hall before the doors opened. This time, however, I hear the early bird ticket price increased from $10 to $15. And there was hardly a line at the door by 8AM. So folks apparently opted for the regular 9AM admission tickets. Truth be told, the real crowd didn't materialize until around 10AM... and then BANG!!! It was solid elbow-to-elbow peeps on Saturday until about 1PM.
On Sunday, there was never an elbow-to-elbow crowd level. But that's not at all unusual. Sunday is just a more casual day for enthusiasts to shop without the hassles of a large crowd that's more typical of Saturday.
All in all, I'm glad we had a booth at ATMA. It's a TON of work, but I now prefer it over selling "online". If I had my druthers, I think EVERYONE should try being on the selling side of the hobby at train shows -- even it it's just once. It would probably change their own behavior as buyers!!!!

Thanks David, I sold at York and a few times at Allentown and your right it is hard but it also can be rewarding. I found out if your prices were fair you got alot of repeat business. Some other sellers should learn that. For instance, I found one dealer trying to sell a Lionel legacy UP SD70 heritage unit in the SP scheme for $1200. I asked him why so high? That's what they are selling for!! I told him NO they are not , being a early legacy unit and with the new ones arriving soon why would I pay that. He told me I was asking too many questions.

Uh oh, passenger cars! K-Line and/or Lionel did a Midnight Chief diesel set, and at least a couple of scale passenger cars including a business car, in the Black Bonnet scheme, way back when. I never went in for any of them despite liking the business car. I was about to ask who's got the tooling for such a passenger set and then thought it really doesn't matter because they can paint anything in a pseudo-Warbonnet scheme these days. MTH once did it on their DDA40X, of all things.
So I guess I am drawing the line. I'm not into reselling either.

I've sold at train shows 2 or 3 times. It does give a different perspective than just attending as a buyer.
I've never bought anything with the intention of reselling it at a profit. Everything I buy I intend to use on my layout though occasionally I've bought something, never got around to using it, and eventually sold it. When I've sold at shows I charge a fair price but give myself some room to go down. As a buyer I expect other sellers to do the same so I usually offer a little less than the seller is asking and most of the time the seller accepts my offer.
I haven't sold on eBay for years but when I did I asked for a low opening bid and let the auction determine the selling price. Most of the items I sold went for more than I thought they would but I didn't mislead anyone into thinking that what I was selling was very rare or very valuable.
I much prefer both buying and selling at shows. As a buyer I can see what I am buying. If it's an engine there's a test track where I can make sure the engine runs. If there are any flaws I can see them and decide whether or not to buy. It's the same as a seller. The person buying from me can see what he's getting and can test engines on the test track. I had a bad experience selling on eBay and haven't bought or sold there since.

I'm really NOT sorry about feeling this way: this paint scheme is an abomination. War bonnets belong on Santa Fe locomotives.
I certainly understand why heretics were burned at the stake.
Now, where did I put my matches?

Who would have thought that a mistake by Lionels printers back in the 50's would give birth to the black bonnet frenzy all these years later.
My thoughts are if you like buy it. I like some fantasy schemes. I like bright and shiny, hey look I just bought MKT MP15 switcher from MTH and I have been accused of buying hideous locomotives. I love it!!! Prototypical? Not sure but I like it!!!! Go black bonnets!!!!!
