Beings I asked the question,
I run MTH premiere, Railking, Menards and some Lionel. I change them up every week or so.
I run scale sized locos and most of my freight cars are scale sized also even the Menards, the box cars are 40' , just not as detailed as some of the others but great paint schemes.
As far as Fantasy schemes go I like most as long as it looks great. Some I just don't get like the black bonnet but if you like it then buy it.

I have a limited amount of freight rolling stock compared with passenger cars although boxcars are on the track at the moment. I’ve got no idea of numbers by manufacturer but I know that my favorites are by K-Line, Lionel and MTH, with just a couple of Weaver and Atlas. Yes, there are fantasy cars in the sense that they are colorful representations of real cars - especially map and billboard cars.
The only photos I have on hand are of tank cars that mainly came from MTH some years back although the K-Line special run aluminum tank cars are the best.

Most of what own is MTH Premier, that is what I prefer. They have nice paint jobs, good trucks and couplers, sturdy details that survive being transported to the modular shows without breaking off detail parts, and they are easy on the wallet. I bought most of my MTH Premier 40’ boxcars for $25-$30 new at York. I also have some Lionel, K-Line, Weaver (nice paint but brittle details and couplers that don’t couple well to non-Weaver cars), and Atlas (also brittle details). I like prototypical cars, but I also like fantasy cars: Mint cars, MTH, Lionel, TCA, Ravens, Orioles, Xmas, Fathers Day, Easter, Patriotic, Halloween, Thanksgicing, Military, etc. I also have some Fantasy trains, Polar Express, The Phantom, Beef and Peeps, Beeps, OGF loco and cars, and the National Capital Tracker loco and cars. I buy what I like, and enjoy having a wide variety of trains to run. After they run around in circles for a while I get tired of the same old and swap out what’s running with something different from my train shelves. I enjoy running them all. Like David1, I try to rotate the trains weekly. Running and showing off my collection to guests, or at a modular club show and seeing peoples faces light up, that’s the best of all.

My freight cars are Railking, Menards and Lionel and a few are other brands. I don’t have many scale size cars. I prefer close to scale cars from Railking and Menards.
I’m not a big fan of fantasy schemes but I have a few.

I run a manufacturer’s grab bag of freight cars - no particular allegiance. If it looks good on my 0-42 curves and fits my theme it works for me. Could-have-been paint schemes are Ok, but I’m not a fantasy car fan.

50-50 MTH/Lionel freight cars with a few K-line. All scale, I buy mostly 40' box cars now as they go the best with the space I have.

Lionel and MTH. I think my only fantasy car is a Halloween box car. And yes I do put it in the train.
