A very dear friend willed me this train. He hasn't passed and he wanted me to have it now. I am honored and will NOT sell it. He is like a father to me. Since he is approaching 90 He does not know when he got it other than as a small child. I had worked on this set for him back in the 80's as it had a bad wire connecting to the tender. It still runs great but I have it in a place of honor on my shelves. What I need to know is the year of the set and if possible the set number. I have the boxes but not the set box they came in as he said it got wet years ago and he threw it out ( I know ). The engine number is 1662 Lionel Lines.Baby Ruth car is #2679 (New 4-31-39), Gondola #2677 (new 9-40), Caboose #2682 ( no build date on it ). Any help I would appreciate. Again IT IS NOT FOR SALE!You would have to pry it from my hands when I die. Very sentimental to me!

I figure it has to be 40 to 42 due to the dates of Built on the cars. I would just like to know for sure what the set number is.

What a great story, and great knowledge from forum members also. Pretty cool stuff. I have a friend that has his original Lionel train set #1421WS from 1946 that was given to him by his sister. The engine #2020 has a smoke bulb (it's a dished bulb)for the pellets to sit in, ONE year only on the smoke bulb.He took all the motors apart and cleaned lubed and greased the gears and wheels, tested on track and put away, each piece is wrapped and put in a box from a empty liquor bottle (his dad owned a liquor store) and he said they fit in there perfectly for storage. rtraincollector those must be really cool catalogs to view.
