Couldn’t agree more! Some people own homes, some rent, some drive chevys, some drive Cadillacs. To each his own.

David
I am wrong. Tonight Mr Muffin announced he has sold 61 big boys and 120 total counting the different ones and the set. I don't know about you but they are out of my price range. I am happy for him though and all those who ordered it.
So in the end You rock as you were correct. Sorry for the misinterpretation.

Mr Muffins email he sends out came today and in it he is doing numbers 4000 as a special run from Lionel. So far he has 40 big boys ordered from customers to make sure they get. made. Lionel requires that at least 40 be ordered on a special run. So much for the discussions of people backing off because of the price. Dave [br Yes… the hobby is doing well and Lionel has done well the last couple of catalogs with these behemoths. I bet the super duper Big Boy set will sell very well too. We should be happy that there are lots people buying the high end stuff. It’s what’s keeping our hobby alive economically.

... Tonight Mr Muffin announced he has sold 61 big boys and 120 total counting the different ones and the set. I don't know about you but they are out of my price range. I am happy for him though and all those who ordered it. ... Indeed! I'm sure those who ordered these goodies will wait with anticipation of their arrival. Then again, there will be some who have ordered the Big Boy Super Set "on spec", because the number produced will most likely be EXTREMELY limited. And only the largest of dealers will stock an "extra" or two. I know the last set like this -- the Southern Pacific Vision Stock Express -- sold out with dealers almost IMMEDIATELY. I had pre-ordered one from Charles Ro, and it's a fabulous all-star set. If I recall correctly, it carried a $2,400 MSRP... and one sold on eBay a couple of weeks ago for $3,900.
I wouldn't be surprised if a few peeps ordered this years Vision set -- knowing very well they should be able to flip it for more than they paid. I think Charles Ro's pre-order price is $3,750 on a $4,500 MSRP. So there's a few hundred bucks to play with there. And I'll go out on a limb here and say the dealers who order an "extra" or two (beyond their firm customer pre-orders) will attempt to sell those "extra" sets at MSRP. I recall one large dealer commenting somewhat "tongue in cheek" that he offered to refund one of his pre-order customers (i.e., the SP Vision Stock Express set), because he could sell the set for MUCH more than the pre-order price after Lionel delivered them.
This all just comes with the turf, when there's beaucoup $$$ to be made in this hobby. Personally, I have no desire to partake in this angle of "the hobby". I will keep my SP Vision Stock Express and enjoy it.
