This guy that everyone is responding to had the same schtick on the OGRForum, and he must have been banned, because he abruptly stopped posting there. Long story short, in his posts Lionel can (usually) do no wrong. He obfuscates and twists clear statements made by other posters in an attempt to change the framing of an argument/discussion. Ah no… I’m just asking for evidence that Lionel is excessively more expensive than other train companies. I must say that I haven’t seen any evidence so far. And an unwarranted personal attack is not evidence either.

It just won’t die despite the evidence to the contrary.

Since MTH no longer puts out a catalog it's not so easy to compare similar products but from what I see the difference in prices from MTH and Lionel isn't all that different. Lionel is a little more expensive but not all that much.
The prices of new MTH and Lionel are too high for me. A LionChief Plus 2.0 traditional size steam engine for $600+ is way more than I am willing to spend. I haven't seen any new Railking steam engines offered but I suspect they would be in the $550-600 price range.
My purchases of new Lionel and MTH will by new old stock that is more reasonably priced or I will buy used. For new rolling stock I'll go with Menards or RMT that is more in my price range but I don't need a whole lot of rolling stock. I pretty much have enough at this point.

The MTH locomotive costs about $80 more but given that the Lionel GP7 was cataloged 2 years ago, the MTH price is reasonable due to the effects of inflation and that the price difference between these two locomotives is negligible.
You've destroyed your argument by making your comparison to a Lionel item from two years ago.
Please enjoy your trains and stop being the perpetual Lionel fan boy. It's an old shtick that the entire train community has tired of.

Hard to see with blinders on. I agree, especially with the mythology of Lionel’s excessive pricing. It just won’t die despite the evidence to the contrary. Oh yes... the evidence is so obvious, the fanboys can't even see through the blizzard of snow they're busy shoveling. Did you do your homework assignment? Obviously not. But perhaps more reasonable peeps can draw their own conclusions of today's market reality.
Early last year, I took delivery of a few of MTH Premier BNSF ES44's in the 25th Anniversary logo theme. With full DCS control and Proto-Sound 3.0, the price was $519.95 MSRP. Less than a year later, Lionel offered the same locomotive models with its Legacy control system and Legacy Railsounds. Catalog price was $699.99 MSRP.
BTW, if you missed out on those jewels, Lionel's latest catalog has a nice selection of more Legacy ES44's at $749.99 MSRP. And ironically, this year's non-powered ES44's with SuperBass sound carry a $549.99 MSRP. Lovely! So the price of today's NON-POWERED Lionel ES44 carries a higher MSRP than MTH's announced MSRP for POWERED UNITS.
The pricing trends are pretty obvious for anyone who simply checks out the market WITHOUT having a predetermined axe to grind. That's not to say MTH prices haven't increased in recent years. Because they have. But it's VERY clear Lionel's prices have increased too -- generally keeping above MTH... and in a very obscene way whenever Lionel has purchased tooling from other importers like MTH.
Look... your money is yours to spend as you see fit. But please leave the Lionel fanboy attitude at the door. You'll earn much more credibility that way. Because right now... we know what the message will be as soon as we read your screen name.

I think this thread has run its course and it's getting nasty.
