As always I never plan on what I'm going to get at any time. I read the catalogs and the custom announcements and then I just let The Voices tell me what I need. The Voices counsel me, they understand, they talk to me. They tell me things that I should buy, they show me things to show to you when they talk to me.
So far I just have some preorders that will bleed into 2023 from last year. The Lionel Legacy Strasburg 2-10-0 #90, a locomotive I've been hoping for for 35 years! (after a hard gulp at the price). And a few custom MTH and Atlas O freight cars from Mr.Muffin, the TCA and the TCA METCA Division.
I'm also going to order an Amtrak and Surfliner Charger locomotives from 3Rd rail. I was hoping to see these with Legacy or DCS but I'll be fine with the TMCC in a 3Rd Rail engine.
I'll always look at future offerings but my desires have mostly been filled, except for two or three locomotives from the past that I may pick up if the time is right when I find them. I will survive without them though. I'll be spending more on layout materials and scenery items as my layout progresses this year.
But The Voices are always present! Voices? We are here to help you. Reach out when these voices start and we will guide you.

In my younger years I set out to buy everything that had eye appeal and acquired quite a huge collection. About 20 years back it was time to build the layout of my dreams and I did that too. Prices were affordable back then and I acquired all of the Eastern Road pieces for my layout theme that is 1940's small town America. After building the layout and sitting comfortably on 100's of pieces that I really don't need it was time to change direction. Today my interest in the train hobby has changed and is maintained mainly for fun and relaxation. I still attend the Allentown shows mainly to browse and meet old friends from the York days. Many of them have changed direction and their interests as well.

My only further thought on 2023 train purchases is that I'd probably need my head examined too if I contemplated any, which I don't. At the moment, I have a major train repair project (watch this space) and other maintenance or parts replacement issues that have so dimmed my enthusiasm that all I can contemplate is using up some of the stock of detailing parts I have accumulated.

For all you fanatics out there, this image of the Lionel 2023 catalog (or the first one this year?) has just appeared on a forum that has 23 PAGES of next catalog wish lists, speculation etc:
I admit that I am curious but I can wait until the thing is published online.

I'm going to start this around 6/2022 I started buying G scale, ( yes I fell to the dark side abit) then about 2 months ago I started buying standard gauge and I think that's going to be my purchases this year and I think my layout is going to be standard gauge on the outside ( 2 loops ) and then O gauge inside of that. So far I have gotten two 390E one prewar, one remake. I have also bought 1766, 1767,& 1768 passenger cars,(red with maroon roofs) and I have 511,512,513,514R x3, 516,& 517 freight cars but have 511,512,513,514R, 517, & 520 coming in, all in OB except the 517 & 520. And the only other cars I want is a 510 & 515. And I'm done and will be selling the duplicates, I have two 514R's that I need to strip and repaint first, there in rough condition cosmetically. But that leaves me with what will I want to run in O gauge, LOL

No interest at all in the Dreyfus featured on the cover of Lionel's new catalog. Dealers have the catalog's content in digital format as part of Lionel's sales kit, so dealers can go live with catalog pre-orders at the same time Lionel releases the catalog on Thursday, 1/12 at 10am Eastern. But aside from the catalog's cover, the dealers have been pretty tight-lipped about the catalog contents.
BTW, I stopped by a local train shop this afternoon... and was hoping to see first-hand Lionel's Black River & Western train set -- particularly to see how badly the coaches with 4-wheel trucks looked in-person. As luck would have it, the dealer was "sold out" of their sets -- including the one they had on display. So obviously, enthusiasts continue to buy this stuff regardless of Lionel's QC issues. Honestly, there's no way I'd touch that set UNLESS Lionel were willing to supply -- free of charge -- replacement SIX WHEEL trucks for the two coaches whose 4-wheel trucks are placed too far inward.
Since I couldn't see the coaches up close in-person, I can only surmise what happened with these coaches. Word on the street is the floors of ALL THREE COACHES are reportedly identical with the truck mounting hole in the same place. The 6-wheel trucks work OK with that. But the 4-wheel trucks are too short to be mounted in the same location for the other 2 coaches. Hence the 4-wheel trucks look silly and awkward.
Nonetheless... at the end of the day, this dealer had no problem selling their allocation of BR&W sets... which of course sends a signal to Lionel that folks aren't THAT disappointed... unless they don't know what's coming their way yet. So don't expect these kinds of issues to improve any time soon. I guess Lionel chooses to address these issues -- or perhaps do nothing -- at delivery time, rather than ensure these problems aren't caught and fixed in production BEFORE product ships on the water.

It is amazing that people would take delivery on a product that is so wrong. But people have been accepting poor products for a long time. It seems QC is not a issue for some. As long as they accept QC issues it will keep happening.
