I'm starting to feel like a poster boy for Menards, but they do seem to be coming up with some nice products and deals these days. They just released these nice flat cars in several road names. I had a couple of their 14-3/4" cars in the past. They will handle tight curves, but they will also overhang significantly and take out anything near the track. As such, I don't have them any more. Nice cards but not for me. Here is the link to them.

Funny you show the truck part of the ad. Every Menards car I purchased I had to work on the trucks or coupler. Most out of gauge. Some had wheel sets out when I bought them. I wonder if they improved them?

Interesting flats - I've had to re-gauge a few Menards wheelsets but no big deal. Did the long flats always have the roller-bearing style trucks? I'd like to see old-school journal boxes if possible. My smaller Menards flat cars also have modern-style trucks.

Are these actually 1/48 scale?

Are these actually 1/48 scale? Good question. They sell two different size flat beds. This one is the longer 14 and 3/4 inch car. I dont know what scale that would equate to but they are a good size.

They scale out to be about 60' so yes they are scale sized. Plus diecast trucks and couplers. Sounds like a deal to me.
Dave.

Glad to see Menards stepping up their game especially since Lionel seems to be leaving me behind pricewise.

The truck side frames bind the axles... The truck frames screws are too long by like 2mm and when fully seated they compress the springs. I ground 2 shorter to 5mm long and they roll okay. I just ordered 50 2.5mm x 5mm black screws to replace them all. After that still had to tweak the frames a bit with a pair of pliers. Also the wheels aren't concentric. I mainly work in large scale 1:29 & 1:32 scales and Menards stuff reminds me of the older cheap Bachmann stuff. I'm happy yes as most of what I do is heavily modify trains for the last 30 years.

Well, maybe they will see this post and make some improvements.

I did some mods on my Menards hoppers that had free-running issues - the coupler tab mechanism was binding the trucks as it was just hanging on the axles. o-gaugeforum.com/thread/6383/minor-menards-car-surgeryDave

Well I returned my 4-car CP set at Menards for a full refund. Noticed the cars were warping up in the center. That and bad trucks just forget about it.

Menards claim to fame is PRICE. Unfortunately the low budget Asian suppliers that they use have yet to implement sufficient quality control. They are still good products but some are "hit and miss" while others need a bit of adjustment. They may be on the right track with rolling stock but not quite there as yet.
