How many "forumites" go down to work on the layout and just run trains ... and get nothing done?!
I need to start kicking it into high and work on the Railroad!

In actuality, I think that we have a nice balance between scenery work and running trains. I voted for running trains more as that is our best option now that most of the scenery upgrades are done. Stuck in a rut, NOT AT ALL.

My next addition is going to be a Engine staging siding. I notice I tend to run less if I have to pull engines off and box or shelve them, than if I had 4 or 5 engines ready to go on a siding. Currently, I am vying for more room for a round house and turntable.... but, ergonomics is getting tight.

Well Daddy, if my layout was as awesome as yours, I'd have a hard time doing anything on it but running trains, too. I think this dilemma is directly proportionate to how large a layout is and how many trains are on it. The larger a layout is with more trains to run, the more the "owner/operator" tends to be content with just running the trains and put off doing any work on it. With my small, 88 sq. ft. finished layout, it only holds my (and others) attention for maybe 15 to 20 minutes, then we want to play pool, darts, or watch a game. But if it was larger with more trains and scenery, I think it would hold the attention longer.

JDaddy, I get what you're talking about. My rationalization for procrastination is that I am thinking through the project and running trains helps me explore all the possibilities. Putting in a staging yard is a big project and a great opportunity. It needs a lot of thought. It will come when it's supposed to. Keep running trains.

At this point I don't have a lot to do to my layout so I run trains. I do have a project in mind, but it's still in the thinking stage. I'll reveal it once I'm sure how I'm going to get it done. So I'm running my trains.
Your layout is fantastic. I would love to see a video.

JDADDY, I run my trains every Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. I get them running and having a few brewskis I get to thinking I need to do this and that and say next week for sure to start. But the same goes for the following week. I think either the beers or the trains get the best of me or BOTH?? LOL, next week is here already...

Laz I am like you. By the time I say, “Next week is here already’” it is like today, already Thursday afternoon.
Note that you run trains Friday, Saturday, Sunday PM.

Your layout is gorgeous!
The Challenger sounds like a monster—which it is!
I seem to alternate running trains, working on the layout, and maintaining trains.

Currently, I am vying for more room for a round house and turntable.... but, ergonomics is getting tight. I don't have the room for a turntable (wish I did). So I have an engine siding were between 3 tracks, I can store 6 engines besides 5 that are permanently on layout. Using a card system, its fun for not only a crew change, but also engine changes for the remainder of the "make believe" destinations. The only engines that are permanent are of course the passenger consists. Sidings really don't take up that much room as would a roundhouse and turntable.

I voted Run Trains More because I do but it's because all of the major scenery is done. There is a lot of detailing to do and I work on it but most of the time I run trains. I'm definitely not stuck in a rut. Instead, I'm reaping the benefits of having a mostly finished layout.
