Denny has a great post on memories and maybe some here also have great memories. My best memory, not trains nor family, but Baseball. The year was 1961 and it was the then that 2 players caught the interest of everyone that loved baseball. They were Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris, better known then as the M&M Boys and their quest to beat Babe Ruth's 60 HR record in a season. Radio, TV, and newspaper caught the action and most of us would run home to catch the evening edition of the Sun-Times paper which devoted the back page void of everything but in bold letters that days final Just the names Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris and below their names the updated HRs of each player. We all had our favorites most wanted Mickey to be the one, some picked Roger. What many never knew till years later that Mickey played with severe pain and also one time hurt on the field came up to bat with blood running down his leg and the umpire asked if he was sure he wanted to continue. Of course we all know the outcome, some say that if Mantle had won that year, there would be no asterisk as was placed and haunted Maris for decades later. To this day, there are still a small group trying to get Maris inducted into the Hall of Fame.

I’d no idea that Roger Maris has not been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, so I read up on it. Sure, a very different era and his career span was limited, but his exclusion seems very unjust. Oh well, another reason why I am really not keen to visit Cooperstown.

My first baseball game at Yankee Stadium was in 1967 (against the Detroit Tigers). By that time Mantle and Maris were not playing for NY (although Maris finished his career in 1967 in St. Louis). I did hear them play by listening to radio broadcasts during the latter parts of their careers. You can’t have a better memory of Yankee baseball than remembering Phil Rizzuto’s play-by play – Holy Cow! Alfred

We here at the OGF can talk about anything EddieG. This is why we are here. You just can't do that on any forum! Even though I am not a Yankee fan but that year of Mantle and Maris was one of the great baseball years for me as a kid. I followed it everyday in the newspaper.

Oh well, another reason why I am really not keen to visit Cooperstown. There are a thousand major league players with much better career statistics and longer careers than Maris that didn’t get into the Baseball Hall Of Fame. You’re missing out not wanting to go to Cooperstown. The town is beautiful and practically every shop and business has a baseball theme. And it’s located next to Otsego Lake where you can take a ride on a river boat, The Glimmerglass Queen. We took a walk over to Doubleday Field and watched an instructional camp playing a game. Phil Niekro was pitching batting practice and Enos Cabell and Robin Roberts were coaching. It was only a couple months before Mr. Roberts passed away. Then we found a cool little sports bar and watched a couple baseball playoff games with fans of many different teams. It was a great time. But the real gem is the Hall of Fame itself. I saw items I never knew about and some I only dreamed about seeing. The wall display of baseballs from all the no hitters was amazing. The display table of all of the World Series Championship rings was worth the trip by itself. Also, a few miles away is the Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Tourist Railroad that is a lot of fun to ride. There was so much to see I need to visit again sometime.

My dad took me there and me and wife have been to Cooperstown several times. If your a Baseball fan and its History of great players can be found there. Through the decades, I've had the pleasure of meeting many players in person, some are in the Hall of Fame, some that should be, aren't. Thanks
