The Santa Fe Warbonnet paint scheme is probably the universally most popular F unit.
But the F unit car body I think is the perfect canvas for any design.

This Warbonnet TMCC set consists of the only F units I have. By accident and not design I have more E units:

There's something that draws me to the F3s. Growing up I probable seen more F3s on the rails then anything else. I have 6 of them 2 SFs and 4 NYC.

I have two Lionel 218 FA's and a Lionel 220 FA (imagine that - the apron is not missing!). I have often thought of running the 218's in tandem - but I am sure that there would be motor synch issues. (Is there a way to avoid this?) At some point I might consider getting SF units in the blue and yellow livery. As far as the article I posted is concerned - It makes me think how crazy it would make a SFmodeler. None the less, it is packed with great detailed historical info. Alfred

My favorite is the Warbonnet. Nothing stands out like it does. Reading this thread it occurred to me that I don't have a F unit of any kind. I'm going to have to rectify that.

I don’t have any F units either. I have New York Central E8s and PAs but no Fs. If I eventually get an F unit or AA set it will be New York Central. No ATSF engines on my layout. They are wonderful on other guy’s layouts but not on mine.

Heck, Country Joe, the New York Central is a wonderful Road name.
I sure would like to find a NYC Niagara in the fantasy gray color.

dennym57, I forgot to ask, if you did get an F, type and road? Alfred I would have to go with Santa Fe and Rock Island. Both are road names from my childhood.

dennymWhat engines/locos and roads do you run? Alfred57, That's a big list. The short list, I run steam and diesel. Some of the road names are Chessie System, Lackawanna, Rock Island, PRR and Canadian National.

Thanks DennyM57 for the info. Cn passenger cars are good looking, and the Lacawana FM has a nice color scheme and pulls well (I have heard - I don't have one). Alfred
