Over the years, and even on auction sites besides E Bay, I've read were modelers will switch tenders with engines. Auctions sell tenders and engines separately and sold. Question, (I've never done it, but curious and would like to know), do Lionel, MTH use the same wiring on "their" products, so their engines and tenders can be switched within their products lines (I don't mean Lionel with MTH or vice versa) and will be compatible?

You can swap Lionel tenders with Lionel tenders. If they are TMCC wireless, you can swap all day, same with Legacy tenders for Legacy tenders. Switching TMCC tenders with Legacy is a little more complicated as the IR sensors are placed in different locations on the drawbar.
As for MTH the answer is a little more complicated. You can't swap PS2 with PS3 tenders. the drawbars have different wire totals. Most PS2 5volt can't be swapped with PS2 3 volt as the 5volts come with teathers and most 3 volt come with the wireless drawbar. Come to think of it, if you have a 3volt engine with a tether, not sure it's compatible with a 5 volt tethered engine. So to answer you question, it depends, but the options to do so would be limited.

Actually all Legacy tenders are not created equally. Some have their IR sensors low, and the newer ones on top as Gary mentioned. Also some electronics on the IR tenders are incompatible. You won't damage them but they won't work either.

On MTH, did they use same wiring for "compatible boards and PSs"? PS2 5 volts compatible with PS2 5 volts, and etcs. Same for Lionel are their TMCC engine plugs compatible throughout their non Legacy runs? Since wiring diagrams aren't available nor printed by them with engines sets. I'm thinking of re-painting and re-decaling some engines I have for myself. Steam with some different tenders from other engines I have. Thanks. Maybe I asked to vast of a question and only going by reading in the past were modelers switched tender and engines with no problems with control. I guess I could just check wiring between the 2 tenders, boards and lead in to plugs with engines.

Just to update. I successfully have my friends engine running. His being a PS 2 with 5 volt boards which died. I successfully transferred my PS 2 with 3 volt boards. Wiring was the same in color coding. Had to also transfer a 4 OHM speaker, and remove the 8 ohm speaker. Also the connectors being different was able to pull pins from my tender, and transfer them to the correct connectors to plugs. Started up and has run successfully for over a day, just the engine, of course, now has a different name on the handheld. WHEW!
