Sad news indeed. I didn’t know Marty personally, but I have an idea of the impact he had on our hobby. I will pray for him and Dotty.

I’m going onto my soapbox to declare how it infuriates me to no end that good people have to suffer while horrible and evil people continue to thrive.
God bless Marty and Dotty and I continue to pray that God provides the healing they need.

I too fall into the category of people who have never met or communicated with Marty Fitzhenry. Over the past 3 years I have read many of his posts on the OGF. The impression I came away with was that he is a very genuine and caring human being who had time for everyone. I just watched a video on OGF of Marty receiving a model of his home presented to him by his very good friend Alex. Knowing what is happening to this kind and highly respected man it was bittersweet to watch. My heart lifted when I saw the shock and joy on his face as he was presented with his gift. I have also seen the video and photos of friends signing his wall in the train room. A moment of great pride for everyone. Our prayers and thoughts go out to the Marty and the Fitzhenry family and friends.

I met Marty at York a little over 3 years ago, and as soon as I told him I lived relatively nearby, he immediately asked me why I hadn't come down to visit. Shortly after that, I visited him and Dotty, and have had the opportunity to visit him about every 5-6 months. When I caught the DCS bug, he took me under his wing and really helped me get started with it. He always made time to answer my questions, including walking me through different steps on the phone to work the bugs out of the system. He also did my first DCS conversion, on my 1998 PS1 Premier Blue Comet. Since this was my first PS3-equipped loco, and since Marty likes to gather signatures, I decided to turn the tables on him and I asked him to sign the tender. Now, more than ever, that Blue Comet, with the signed tender, is a highly-prized part of my collection. I consider it an honor to have him as a friend, and will always remember him.

Prayers for him and his family. I am also one who never met him, but even though I didn't know him, his high level of involvement and passion with the hobby was evident. It is sad, a reminder of our mortality, and another sign of a changing of eras/generations in the hobby.

Just an update. Dotty has posted on OGR that Marty has entered hospice and is no longer receiving any treatments other than for pain.
This is sad news. Marty is definitely one of the good guys in the hobby. My thoughts are with Marty and his family.

John sounds like he was a great mentor for you. Prayers for Marty and especially Dotty through these terrible times.
