My MEC (now Rutland) rear truck was binding and derailing when it wasn't move freely. After consulting Dave at Lionel it turns out the factory did not build up the rear guide post correctly. Even adding a extra washer. Here's a pic of the corrrect build for the guide post if you are having issues. Bet it would be the same for other steamers as well.

Gary am I correct in assuming that you repaired your engine and problem solved?

These are important mistakes as they never should have happened in a well run inspection program. Lionel keeps losing our faith in their products.
Acknowledging a problem is one thing, preventing them is quite another. This should be totally unacceptable to Lionel's customer base.

Gary am I correct in assuming that you repaired your engine and problem solved? It's much better, just moving the rear truck side to side. Problem cured? I'll know when I get it on the layout.

I have the engine at work. Not only did I have to fix this issue, I re-wicked the smoke unit to try to cut down on the spitting it does
.
