First off let me say I am not sorry for doing the inventory. The bad part was having the wife enter the info.
Number one is it should be in a database not an excel spreadsheet. I used an Excel spreadsheet because I was able to get one already made out that someone spent a lot of time to create and it is really very good. After getting it and sitting on it for a couple years I decided I had better get an idea of what I do and do not own with the associated cost. I figure I better think at least of insuring what I have.
I have only entered some of my power - Steam, Diesel and Electric. After copying information from some of my boxes (3 pages worth) and letting her enter the data I am in BIG trouble. Let me state a couple things before I get scolded here. One, she does all the scenery. Two, she has always been supportive. Three, she is involved not only with the layout but also planning trips that involve trains.
BUT letting her enter data, which I do not like doing, was the BAD part. She is now actually seeing the total cost rising. Try telling your wife, who has never said NO you can not have that, due to cost (although there have been strange sounds made) that it isn't that bad. What she does not understand is that she is entering RETAIL prices and has not yet got to entering what I paid. I keep saying wait and then look at the totals when done. Yes it WILL be high but not next to retail.
Bottom line is I love my wife, she IS supportive and we both enjoy the layout and the reaction of people who see it. SO I continue to move forward but ever so lightly. LOL
Something in the cooking pot smells good but it sure is warm in here!

Curtis, I’m looking for the problem here, but I’m not seeing any. You don’t seriously think your wife would complain about your train investments, do you?
If she does, do what I do. I bolted a 3 ft. thick chain to a wall with a heavy dog collar attached. Once or twice train friends came to visit and saw her helplessly sitting on a chair that I graciously provided next to the wall.
Needless to say the chain and collar are no longer needed. She now buys the plane tickets to York.

When I started building the layout I was keeping tack of the cost as I went along.I soon realized If I new the cost my wonderful wife would know the cost. So if you find yourself, back to the wall in front of a firing squad, don't go to meet your maker knowing you provided the bullets.

Curtis,
I see one major mistake in your approach and it is not enlisting your wife to help you. It was telling her the true cost of your trains. LOL!
My wife and I are on the same page with my hobby. She knows I love it and it keeps me out of trouble, so she allows it. But we also discuss if and when I can purchase something new and significant. I am on hiatus from large purchases for a while. Inflation is high, one kid in college and another 2 years away, saving for retirement which is ~6 years away, all take priority.

Once my wife went to a train show with me it was an LCCA show. While there she asked me if my trains were as expensive as the ones for sale there. I replied noooo.

Now that is a newlywed mistake! I'm a bachelor and even I know you never tell women how many or how much when it comes to trains, guns, boats and hot rods.

You people just do not understand! I love country music. My favorite song is "I'm in the doghouse now". LOL Naw really she is very supportive as I don't drink, smoke, do drugs, or gamble. My trains are my meds that relax me. Wait I guess I am on drugs then. Train drugs. AND everyone knows as you age you take more Meds.

Funny part of story is I handed her another sheet of inventory that I copied today. Just some MTH Premier cars. Still have RailKing, Lionel, Atlas, Weaver, Williams and some others to do. Her Response?
"How many more pages do you think you have?"
My answer!
"30 or 40"
DEAD SILENCE!!
Good thing she is into this hobby too. AND Of Course I added "I haven't started on your items yet either". God I love my wife!!!

I skimmed the spreadsheet tonight and realized there is no ACTUAL COST or WHAT I PAID Column. Now I will have to adjust everything and every page with that column and add in the formulas. Nice thing is I will have a complete list for insurance when done.

This is just my opinion, nothing against anyone, but for me, I don't trust keeping anything on record of what I have for trains on a computer, especially if it's connected to the internet. God forbid someone hacks a computer, then they can steal that information. If I keep track of items I have, I've just used plain old notepad paper.
