Ugh....yeah, it's a call based on your pain level. My train purchases have really dropped in frequency to once or twice a year because of shipping costs, no matter who the seller is. I try to jam several items into an order for the same shipping rate. I'm in Canada, so I'm definitely selective - paying way over the cost of a single item in exchange, shipping and duty isn't in the cards.

ScaleRail, there is always another deal. You'll find it again at a better price. Don, you may have to sit tight and set up eBay searches, which is how I have eventually sourced specific cars that I was after. Yes, those shipping charges are particularly high (but that’s what we customers face today with just about all shipping) and I think amount at least in part to another premium on the price. Nearly $200 for a single car is pricey BUT if it completes what you are building up you have to balance that against waiting to find it elsewhere at possibly not much price difference.
I really don’t care for the way Trainz do business but in the past they have turned out to be the only source for long out of production cars I was hunting for.
P.S. Ya' know, as this car appears to be scarce I think in your place I'd grab this one if you really want it; nobody is likely to give you a bargain sale on such items.

Don, I’m not a Milwaukee Road fan so I don’t know how readily available this car is or the likelihood of finding it at a better total price. Finding it at a local train show would be ideal, no tax or shipping.
I expect the price of petroleum to continue to increase, inflation to increase, and the recession to deepen. That same car may cost considerably more 6 months from now and your investments worth less making it even more expensive.
This isn’t an easy call. If you are willing to wait and think you can score a better deal then don’t buy now. However, if you don’t think you can find the car at a better total price and that the current economic conditions will continue to deteriorate, maybe it’s worth the price to buy it now.
It’s a tough decision.

DON, I have contacted TRAINZ a and have made an offer, even if there is no offer. Sometimes he took it and other times he didn’t. Explain to him about the shipping. The least he can say is no and worth a try.

scalerail, You have to join Trainz For $10 a month to buy something. What is with that? I'm confused.

I’ve bought from them without paying the $10 fee. I think they have a special member section or something with harder to find items when you join and pay the $10.

The $10 per month is their premmium membership, you get first crack at items for the first 7-10 days they are listed. If you order much you get it back through their points system, I think the membership gives you three or four times the bonus points. I always look at it as a free piece of rolling stock now and then, but it probably just about offsets the monthly fee for me. For only ordering a box car once or twice a year I don't think it'd be worth it.

Guys, this is what they do. Their hard to find or very popular items are called "Preview" items. This means you can't buy them for seven days unless your a "Private Car" member. That cost you another $10 a month. I finally saw the set of cars I had been looking for for months and it was a Preview item. I just thought I would wait but it sold to a "Private Car" member before I could even buy it. I think it's rip and just another way for them to make more money. What do you think? Don

They can get some customers to pay $120 a year to be Private Car members. That’s a good deal for them, not so good for us.

Just to let you folks know, I'm looking for the last Premier version of these cars. They made three runs as far as I know and all were better than the last. I bought four cars of the last version thinking it wouldn't be hard to find the rest. They were cataloged in the MTH 2020 issue and were released in 2021 so they are newer. I want all the cars to match but I'm finding they are a hard thing to find. I admit I didn't know much about Trainz when I started looking. If I knew how hard it is to find these cars I would of plucked down my ten bucks extra and bought them. I don't agree with how Trainz does business but they are in the business to make money. I will still use them.....If I have to but will watch out for "my" cars on E-bay first. Don

I live in Florida and their shipping is a bit high even to me. I also work in shipping and im just used to far better pricing. But for the private car membership, I'm a member and for $10 dollars a month or $120 a year I think it's a solid deal. I mean I would waste that $10 dollars on something else anyway

Don,
The decision is subjective…
-How bad do you want it?
-Is it likely to appear for sale again, soon?
-Will it likely appear for sale much cheaper than the out the door price on Trainz?

Do you have the MTH Part Number for the specific car you are looking for? That would make it much easier for us to be on the look out for it.
