Who or where do you get your layout inspiration from?
For me, it is a work in progress. I am always looking for good ideas to improve the layout. Our OGF, for sure and other on-line platforms that feature great layouts. Lots on You-Tube now. But one individual I get a great deal of inspiration from is our own Big Crab Cake, Emile. He is so creative. He models like we do with a Christmas theme. Not a whole lot of us out there that do it on a year round basis, but the number is growing.
As mentioned in another thread, we are adding a Parade to the CIC portion of our layout. What would a Parade be without a band. I remembered a photo that Emile posted of an English Soldier Band that is part of his wonderful layout. The image of that photo has stayed with me ever since Emile posted it. It was just the solution we were looking for to incorporate a beautiful band leading our Parade.
I have subsequently posted this photo to related FB groups and for several days now, it stays on tip of the charts. I am not alone in admiring Emile's work.
I also have gained inspiration from Rocky Mountaineer David's beautiful layout. He has some of the best Christmas related scenes as well.
I guess inspiration is all around us, you just have to look.

I would say that my greatest inspiration has always been the Lionel 1949 showroom layout. I remember first seeing photos of it when I was a boy in the 1950s. Lionel's semi-scale trains looked so real in that layout environment and are the reason I don't run scale size trains on my layout. If I had the room I would re-create that layout.

I don’t have a single inspiration layout. I tend to take bits and pieces from many different layouts, which is probably why my layout is somewhat of an eclectic mix of things.

On our last layout we borrowed ideas from online track plans, YouTube videos, and from modular layouts we saw at the Amherst Train Show. Took photos or screen grabs and stuck them in a folder on our computer to reference when we got around to building. Most of that had to do with track planning more than scenery/themes. Did most of that ourselves based on what we had available. Probably follow the same routine on the next layout.

I got most of my inspiration from my cousin Dave who was into trains forever it seems. Although he was older than me it was his layouts that got me started. After all these years and many different layouts I moved to a senior apartment. Not having a huge amount of space I decided I would build a Christmas layout that would be up all year. The layout that would inspire me was Brians (PTC) layout that got me started in building a Christmas, dept 56 type of layout. I have had a great time building this layout using scale trains along with dept56 and I'm not done. One other person that inspired me was Emile. The first time I saw his YouTube tube video about the polar Express and Christmas cemented in my mind what I wanted to do. Its been a great ride being here with Brian, Emile and the OGF.

I watched a video some years ago about ptc's layout. He and Elizabeth have layouts that just knocks your socks off.
There is a Youtube guy, Sean's Train Depot. I really like his layout. Very cool. He puts out some great videos.

Every time i visit a layout i come away with something. Sometimes its a scene in a modular layout, my mountain dividing two areas came from a ho reading modular layout. Inspiration for trees came from a 2r o scale layout and the raritan valley high railers. Every layout has something that presents an aha moment. Everything presents a learning opportunity.

I get most of my inspiration from all the different railroad subjects that have interested me over the years. Shortlines, steam, oddball cars & locomotives, the rumble of O scale/gauge is all part of it.

Just as in life itself, I strive to learn something every day. That includes my hobbies. I learn and absorb, sometimes outright steal, new ideas for all aspects of layout building.
Some examples of things I’ve incorporated into my layout building that I never knew about or were not available yet since my earliest layout building days: Mianne Benchwork Bus wiring at the edge of the layout Posi-Lock Connectors TMCC/DCS/Legacy Styrofoam/plaster cloth for landscaping Scenery ideas
Its fun learning something every day!

The rebuild of my layout will begin at the end of the month. My inspiration comes from where I grew up in the Ironbound section of Newark NJ. Every street looked like this but in decline by the 60s/70s.

I first make a reason for the railroad to be there. I had and will have again, a short electric line that went to three copper mines. I built the mines, then figured out a way for the RR to get to them. For me, everything has to have a reason to be there. Don

It took me 2 years to finish my 5x8 layout. It being in my bedroom gave me time to ponder it at least twice a day. I knew a urban/city scene would give me the best use of limited real estate. That, and a circus/amusement park area. There is nothing that I wish I had done differently.

I saw an N gauge layout at a show. Just scaled it down to what I had room for. Then added some super streets. Now if I could stop working on everyone else's layout, I might finish mine....
