Wow, skillfully done. You need to start working on JDaddy's OGR box car.
Give us a little background. How did you paint them, what paint did you use, how did you mask them off, did you remove the original paint, are they plastic bodies or diecast, etc. I keep saying that one day I will start modeling locomotives. Need to learn some tricks.

How did you paint them, what paint did you use, how did you mask them off, did you remove the original paint, are they plastic bodies or diecast, etc. I keep saying that one day I will start modeling locomotives. Need to learn some tricks. The engine and Tender are Diecast. All parts, cab, domes, light and cowcatcher were attached with screws and removed. They were soaked in brake fluid and with a tootbrush and stiff 1/2" brush all original paint removed. There was no need to mask anything off. Primed with Rust O Leum light grey primer. Let everything sit for 24 hrs. The handrails were masked off, as well as the wood pile in Tender, the tool box on tender removed. Then sprayed with a Satin Black coat. Sit for 48hrs. Then painted cowcatcher red from sides (I wanted the spacing to remain black since MTH did not provide cutout on this, yet give the look). Lamp, and Dome spacers, as well as detail engine interior with Acrylic paint, using brush. The wood pile was given acrylic paint by brush using Burnt Umber, light grey and flesh tones washes. Finishing off with a black was to bring out details. The couplers were airbrushed rust. Tool box painted a light brown with hinges painted. As to caboose, it was plastic so a soaking in 91% alcohol to remove factory paint. A light grey primer inside and outside. Outside was completely masked so interior could be spray painted. After 24 drying, interior was masked off and roof so sides could be spray painted. Then after drying, sides were masked off and roof spray painted. Sides were given a light black acrylic wash to bring out the siding. After all dry, Decals applied and set, wait 24hrs and a Clear Matte was sprayed over Engine, Tender and caboose. I like to remove all factory paint, otherwise paint over paint starts to hide details. Yes, we could make our own "Traveling Boxcar". A donated boxcar, repainted and decals by our sponsor Highball Graphics.

How well do those decals take to Micro Sol and Micro Set Walter? I used Micro set and as you can see on the caboose, worked great.

I had to take a second look at the cow catcher. Great idea to paint it the way you did. Easily adds detail. Great job all around on the paint.

Thanks for all the kind words. I thought the original colors were to bright for my layout and wanted an old steamer of the old west as seen at turn of the century. Saw some pictures from True West magazines over the years and finally decided to go this route. Over the years in "N" and "HO" I sometimes couldn't find engines in my Heralds, or favorite lines, so would re-paint and re decal them.
